Leaking Intake Seal

A friend of mine asked me about a problem that her and her husband are having with their 93 Tahoe. I told her Id post it up here and see what you guys had to say.

Their Tahoe has the 350 with 150K+ miles. It is leaking some oil (im not sure exactly what "some" oil is, sounds like not gushing but more than a drip every few days). While getting some other things fixed the dealership told them that they had a leaking intake seal and that it would be about $700 to fix it.

They are looking to get rid of the Tahoe in the near future. Is there any quick fix, such as oil additive that can recondition the seals? Honestly I dont even know where an intake seal is or how it could leak oil (im not much of an engine guy). I think if they have to they would go ahead and fix it, but since they want to get rid of the Tahoe before too long they dont want to drop too much cash on it.

If you need any more info please let me know. Thanks for your help guys! :D

other than the fact that the Tahoe didn't come out in 93................you sure it isn't a 95 or newer????

that should be a fairly easy repair for a shadetree. If he's confident enough to pull the intake, he can go down to the local auto parts store and get an intake gasket set, which will have all the gaskets/seals he needs. Fel Pro MS93317 is what he needs. And a gallon of anti freeze. Unless he saves and re-uses all the antifreeze

the Felpro set runs $14.99 and figure $10.00 a gallon for antifreeze (prices at Parts America in Md. )

Yeah sorry, Its a 93 2dr Yukon.

That sounds about like what I was thinking when she mentioned intake gasket. However she is saying it is leaking oil. No oil runs in that area, just antifreeze, right? Im having her call the dealership again and find out exactly where the oil leak is coming from.

Thanks for the help, Ill post again with more info.

Oil splashes under the intake and can cause some leakage. Actually they can get pretty bad. $600 labor is a little high though. The job can be done in a couple of hours with a good tech. I am not sure what the book says but by the dealers figure at $70 an hour it would take them 5.5hr. I guess it depends on how much it is leaking and how long they expect to keep it. I would check around on prices.

Based on internet searching, talking to 2 dealership service advisors and the local NAPA service center, I'd say intake manifold gasket leaks on 350 engines are fairly common. $700 seems high, the last estimate I got was for 3.40 hrs. labor (with A/C) at $78.00/hr., $62.80 for parts (gasket set, anti-freeze, oil change), plus tax. I didn't find an "easy fix". The link is my post and member responses.
