Copying this over from the general board. Mods, sorry if that isn't cool. :wtf:

 

Okay, so I have been reading all of this SeaFoam talk on the platform specific boards. I am at lunch, looking under the hood of my '99 5.3 with a buddy, looking to see which line will be easier to pull for vacuum. I am looking at the PCV area and he asks' what the hell is this?" Since he has a early 70's sedan, I am thinking he must be looking at some emissions doo-dad or something. He points underneath where the duct from the airbox to the throttle body is and there's a freaking nest under there. I about crapped my pants.

 

So, I get it home (after dark of course) and start peeking. I was planning on cleaning the butterfly because the throttle "sticks" shut a tad, so I figured I'd do that and remove the nest. We're talking upscale.....toilet paper, dog hair, twigs, indoor/outdoor carpet fibers, cigarette butts, and even some thin fibers of the landscaping bark. I don't remember my truck sitting for very long...ever. So I am wondering why in the heck a bird picked that spot to build it's nest. It has to be a bird. The fan isn't going to suck all of that crap into there...and not into that particular spot. A rat or mouse can't get up there from what I'd guess. The amount of stuff I pulled outta there was enough to fill 1/3 to 1/2 of a 1 gallon sandwich bag. What the hell? No fried birdy though.

 

We always have birds nesting on our porch throughout the spring and summer and there was a finch that would land on both my wife's vehicle and my truck the instant we pulled up into the driveway, but WFT? I don't look under the hood that often, but I know I have been under there a few times since summer. LOL! I guess I just didn't look in that area. I know guess that the motor nevers gets hot enough to set that crap on fire then. Phew! There is still some residue in there that I'm gonna have to hose out or something.

 

Well, the SeaFoam experiment was fun. I used the PCV hose. I used a section of tubing that connects the ice make in the fridge to the water line. Well, I used some of the leftover ( Jason V....if you end up readin this, bite me because I know what you're thinking), not the existing stuff. I guess I let it suck it in slowly enough. I didn't realize there would be that much suction. It never stalled, though, and I used the wholel can. I let it sit for 1/2 hour and started her. She was pretty easy to start , but she smoked. I took her out of the neighborhood and left a fog throughout. I ran her in 2nd for quite awhile. It was kinda fun, but kinda embarassing. I'm glad it was night. Who knows if it did any good. The truck was running fine other than the butterfly sticking shut once in awhile, so I guess I'll never know for sure unless it starts to complain....

 

I think I'll post this in the Light Duty forum...this whole nest thing is whacking me out. Maybe others have had it.... :D

I was out of town for week and my truck sits in the driveway, It was about two weeks old when I left. So I get back and one of my buddys comes over to check it out. I lift the hood and theres a nest in my engine also. Not sure what did it, but they started with grass and twigs, but that must have been to much work because they pulled the a bunch otfthe firewall insulation off. Boy was I pissed the whole left side beteewn the intake and Vortec cover.

 

Guess I need to build a bigger garage.

LOL! Most of my sandwiches are of the Al Bundy variety...a Tangwich or toothpaste sandwich. I think the wife is out to kill me....there's always all of this crap for the kids and her in the house, but she acts like she doesn't have any clue about what I eat. It is simple. Crap. If it is bad for ya...I like it.

 

 

 

The mod idea is funny, too. I think I will add that! Dang, I thought the truck was seeming faster. I'll bet that nest knocked off at LEAST 2 10ths. I did notice a lack of power this morning, now that you mention it. Oh crap....I just spilled the beans. There goes my patent! Dang you, bartlanz! :D

...I do think I confirmed that it was a bird. There is bird kaka on one of the metal tubes/lines in that area. I suppose if a bird can get it's head in there, it will try to nest. Time to get the old 12 gauge out.

I had a similar experience when I bought my truck ( a few months ago). I'm looking at the truck at the stealership and I pop the hood to have a look around and what do I find but a big nest on the driver's side of the intake and most of my firewall insulation missing. I look at the salesman and say "this truck's been sitting awhile huh?" he says I don't think so. I tell him whatever,if I'm going to buy this you better clean all that outta there. anyway about a month ago I'm cleaning the truck and checking under the hood and decide to check the air filter since the truck seemed a little sluggish lately. I pop the airbox cover off and take the filter out and what do I find but the rest of my firewall insulation,some leaves,about 1000 acorns,seads,misc crap. the mess was covering almost half my air filter and was about three handfuls. so I grab the shopvac and clean out the air box and filter. I also posted an eviction notice stating I removed your belongings and your not welcome here.truck runs a little better now :wtf:

That is more bizarre than mine, I think. I guess that makes me feel better... LOL!

Used to see that alot on Toyotas...especially the acorn collections in the air filter housing. Found a "tobacco water pipe" in one customer's throttle body...he came in complaining that the throttle would stick and the vehicle would take off on it's own and lose it's brakes. (Told him to hide his paraphenalia on the other side of the air filter next time.)

Well I hope guys from the Ford and Dodge boards don't get a whole of this topic.

 

Because all we will here for a year, is that our Chevys are so slow, that birds can make nest in them.......  :cheers:

 

 

 

Well we can say that they have more taste than to pick a Dodge or a Ford........
