Another tool box question.

As the title states, I have another tool box question. I want a tool chest mounted in the bed of my truck to hold all the necessities and the occasional rifle on hunting trips, but here's the kicker. I want one that will mount flush with the bed rails, but not on the bed floor. I would love the flexibility of lying sheets of plywood on the bed and still having lockable storage. I've searched long and hard, but have yet to find any company that makes such a box. Any clues?

I have'nt seen any like that,BUT you may be able to adapt and overcome. You may be able to fit an over the rail tool box for a small pick-up and make your own supports for it from the floor of the bed to the sides of the box, you will need one with hinges toward the cab so that you can get to the lock/latches...just an idea

You know...that's not a bad idea at all. I was actually toying with the idea of building one from scratch myself, but I'm not that good at welding. I may still give it a try, but your idea will save a lot of headache for now. Thanks!

At one time, I saw a truck tool box that fit on the bottom of the bed. When you open the tail gate, the drawer slip out from the inside of the box. I have not see one in quite a while, but it was a neat set-up and it held a lot of tools. The only bed space you loose is the is about the 8-10 inches on the bottom of the bed.

What I had in mind was a tool chest that was mounted underneath the bed rails an had anywhere from 4 to 8 inches of space under the chest itself so, in effect, the weight of the chest was supported by the bed rails and enough space to slide lumber or anything else under the chest for transporting. I suppose one could build a frame a bit like scaffolding that could bolt to the bed and then bolt the chest to the frame.

You are talking about a Weatherguard box. Here is a link.

I have been looking for something like that, but they don't seem to exist. I was hoping the "porkchop" shaped ones that fit in front or rear of wheel well would do the trick, but they are too tall, even if you get one meant for a mini-truck.

What I want is a pair of boxes that go from front to rear on each side, straddling the wheel wells, and going halfway down, but not poking above the bed rails and still leaving 49" between them.

Each one would have a full length tray on top for long items like fishing rods, etc.

Anybody know someone in the business of making these things?

I bet they would sell like hotcakes...
