02 Sierra 1/2 ton 4x4 automatic transmission slips - When I am stopped (at a traffic signal for instance) and proceed (or try too) the transmission slips and takes a few moments to get going. This doesn't happen all the time - it may happen 3 times a day and then act perfectly for a month then do it again.

Not a common issue that I can point you to. Without some specific diagnostic info, I can't help ya.

The Dealer said it was reading a J6355 code, and they have had several trucks in their shop with the same problem, but no cure.

You must have misunderstood the code because there is nothing like that. Powertrain codes start with a "P" and the numbers don't go anywhere near that high.

I just went out and pulled the service ticket - it says "code J6355 stored in computer for 1-2 downshift"

People who transcribe the tech's notes into the explanation you see printed on the invoice are usually not technical at all and they just type in what they think they read. I've seen some doozies for explanations that weren't even close to the real explanation.

Actually, that looks more like a labor operation code, though tranny labor ops start with a K and engine op codes a J. Since I'm not at work at the moment, I don't have access to our labor time guide to look that one up, but I will when I get there.

Nope, closest I could come to J6355 was J6353, which is "Module, Powertrain control - Transmission reprogramming." In other words, that labor op code would be used to submit a claim for a calibration update for the tranny.

My truck used to do the same thing... It would act like it was in neutral for a second and then drop into gear. Sometimes it would rev over 2 grand and hit first hard enough to chirp the tires.

Luckily the service manager and the service tech were able to "duplicate" this problem. They fixed it a couple of years ago with a reprogram of the computer and it hasn't done it since.

hey did this concern ever get fixed??? sounds like a shift cable Issue causing intermitant issue

This seems to be an all too common issue. Both the 99 and 02 Silverados I've owned did it. I think...and this is just my humble opinion...that this condition is basically caused by the fact that the 5.3 idles at about 500 rpm in gear. And, that seems to be a little low to keep the fluid at a minimum pressure required, at least 100% of the time. If it does it, let off the throttle for a second and try again. I'd say the worse thing you could do was to push the engine to higher rpm until it engages and barks the tires...this can't be good for the long run.
