THERE IS A RUBBER "ISOLATOR" ON EACH END OF THE TORSION BAR CROSSMEMBER WHERE IT SITS IN THE FRAME. I BELIEVE MINE HAVE GONE BAD AS I CAN PICK UP ON THE CROSSMEMBER WITH THE TORSION PRESSURE RELEASED. THE CROSSMEMBER CAN BE LIFTED ALL THE WAY UP IN THE FRAME RAILS WITHOUT LOOSENING ANY OF THE BOLTS! THE GM DEALER SAID THESE ARE ACTUALLY MOUNTS AND NEED TO BE REPLACED IF I CAN MOVE THE CROSSMEMBER WHILE THE BOLTS ARE STILL TIGHT. WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR REPLACEMENT? DO I HAVE TO REMOVE THE TORSION BARS OR CAN THESE MOUNTS BE REPLACED WITHOUT REMOVING THE BARS?

Step one. Turn off caps lock, it makes the post VERY difficult to read.

 

Step 2. Get the parts

 

Replace the parts. Yes, this can be done without unloading the bars. Un-bolt them (3 bolts, 2 in the bottom and one on top), lift the crossmember and remove the mounts. Might need to do one side at a time. The passenger side one may need to be cut down. Cut it just enough to get it in, but not so much that the nut doesn't grip a lot of threads.

Thanks. I just finished replacing all of the ball joints. I unloaded the bars for that procedure. After looking at the new parts, I realized that it shouldn't be that difficult. I didn't even know that the torsion bar crossmember had mounts. Thought it just bolted to the frame. That explains the very loud thump heard when hitting bumps.....so I replaced the ball joints because they seemed a little sloppy......and I saw that the crossmember was loose.....apparently the mounts are broke!
