Possible Tranny Problem

Recommended Posts

I got a 02 sierra 1500 Z71 and the tranny acts a little funny with certain throttle positions. If i accelerate at say half throttle everything shifts normal, but say i just give it a slight throttle it seems the slip for a split second from 1-2 and 2-3. Also when i slow down around corner then give some throttle it delays for a second then goes into gear. Do i need a fluid change, or one of them shift kits you guys are talking about.

thanks

145000 KM

any help would be appreciated

It depends, do you have any codes in the computer? From your description, I would guess that you do need a shift kit. The best thing to do is go talk to a good tranny shop, they could tell you for sure.

You could email the guys at www.bulkpart.com. They have been very helpful in helping me with my problems.

IMHO..............

*Do a complete fluid flush

*install an oversized cooler

Most earlier failures can be avoided with keeping the fluid fresh and even more important keepin it cool.

I put one of these in my '96, and WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!  Works like a truck trans should, not a friggin' slush box car trans  !!

You say your truck has 145k km's on it, where are you located?

Derek, did you install the kit your self or you went to trany shop and they didi it.

What is involved if I do it my self?

I did it myself, it took about 4 hours. I bought the ATSG manuals for the 4L60E, but they weren't really required. I have a hoist, which made it a lot more convenient.

You need to unbolt the trans crossmember and slide it back so that you can get the pan off. Then you remove the valve body and seperator plate. From there, follow the instructions, swap a bunch of valves and springs for the ones in the kit, drill out a few holes in the seperator plate (drill bits are provided), and swap out the pump pressure regulating valve (in the main trans body, assesible from below). A second set of hands is helpful when reinstalling the seperator plate and valve body.

I didn't install the 2nd/4th gear servo seals, as the Y-pipe has to come off and I didn't feel like openning that can of worms. Trans seem to work just fine as-is. I may install them someday.

If there is anyone in the south western Ontario region of Canada interested in putting in one of these kits, I can give you a hand/install it for you. PM me.

Cheers,

Am I the only one that wonders why the manufacturer doesn't do this from the get-go ?

*Better shifts

*longer trans life

What is the downside (cons) of installing a shift kit ?

It's the same old story, you can't satisfy all of the people all of the time.

GM wants to put out a product that is smooooooooth, so that some yuppy in his Escalade doesn't spill his low fat decaf mochachino all over his Armani every time he winds it out off of a stoplight and the tranny slams into second.

Those of us who use our trucks like trucks are willing/eager to give up some/all of this smoothness if it means better reliability/drivability/predictability. And so the story goes...

My $0.02,

Derek
