Yesterday as I was backing out of a space, my steering column locked up, then my brakes did the same. My battery light also came on. I couldn't turn my steering wheel or push the brake pedal. After putting the truck in park and turning it off, I then started it back up. The truck has acted normal since then. I took it to the stealership, but the truck threw no codes, so they cleaned the throttle body and did nothing else. When they called to tell me to pick it up and tell me what they did, I told them I was still nervous, since this obviously happened for a reason. What could have caused this? Any ideas?

No idea right off, but I'll ask around. Seems like I remeber this happening to someone else a year or so ago. I've had my Blazer 5 years now and I've never had it happen though.

Did the engine die? If it's not running you have no power steering and no power brakes. Your description of what hapopened has me baffled. Sounds like you couldn't turn or stop but your Blazer was still running. That "is serious" it is also 2 seperate problems. Can you elaborate.

The engine never died. That is what is confusing me as well as anyone I ask. I couldn't turn the wheel or push the brake pedal at all. It wasn't like I lost power steering or brakes, because with effort, I could atleast turn the wheel and push the pedal right??? The wheel locked up, and I couldn't turn it at all, same with the brakes. What surprised me was that the truck didn't throw any codes. I figured it would atleast throw one since the battery light came on. Like I said, the truck was fine after I restarted it. Right now I'm driving my parent's trucks around except for going to school. I guess I'll have to take it to a mechanic who has the ability to fix trucks without having to see a code.

Do you have any after market alarms/stereo stuff? Maybe some wireing is tangled up under the dash? That's the only explanation I can come up with without seeing it.

After posting here, I got to thinking. I'm not 100% sure that the engine didn't die. I was focused on the steering and brakes that I didn't focus on the engine. I know I sound stupid, but I can't remember. If the engine did die, what could have caused this? Sorry for the bad info. Thanks alot for the help. BTW, no I don't have any after market stereo stuff.

Today I talked with a mechanic who is a family friend over the phone. He mentioned that it might have been an EGR valve stuck shut. He said this wouldn't cause a code to show up, and that if this ever happens again to lightly step on the gas. After stepping on the gas you should get power back. Does this sound like a possibility?

My 94 blazer has done something similar to that a couple of times. What will happen to me is I will try to pass someone and when i let off the gas the pedal will immediately go to the floor, like cruise controll took over and went to full bore. And I can't stop it because at the same time my brakes will lock up, like I can't pushed them down at all. Only way I can stop it when this happen is put it in nuteral. The motor will tach and I get my brakes back. It's the wierdest thing, I should probably have it looked at sometime, but it hasn't done it in a while.

I had this happen to me on a 93 blazer and it was chunks of carbon in the EGR valve which caused it to stick and I lost all vacuum till I cleaned the carbon out of the EGR.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
