I recently purchased a 2001 3/4 Suburban with the 8.1. I want more power and I'm looking to spend approx. $1,500.00. Any suggestions would be great. I was looking at true dual exhaust and a Westers tuner. The only current upgrade that I have is K & N air filter.

True duals are a mixed bag on a modern closed loop engine (even a big block) and can result in the loss og low speed torque and throttle responce. If you spend and 3 k you could supercharge it and get some very serious power from it and make it a real sleeper too.

I have the 8.1 also and am looking to add power. I want the Westers but still am a little afraid to change the computer. Just seems like the 8100 is a pig at certain times. Cant believe it would only be set at 345 hp, should be around 400 I would think. Anyhow, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

With a little massaging th 8.1 is a beast and with a mild boost of 7 or 8 PSI from a super charger you will get close to 500HP and close to 700ftlbs of torque. A super really wakes that beast up which does not breath to well stock from restricted intake and cam timing which pretty much falls flat after 4000 RPM. A warmer EFI frendily cam with more lift and a bit more duration will wake the beast up too as big blocks are capable of some awesome power the small block owners can only dream about when set up properly.

To stay within your $1500 budget, there aren't too many choices!

The tune will definatly give you the biggest bang for the buck.

Next a good cat back system like the Corsa so you don't lose any lowend torque.

If you do your own dual system, add a good "X" pipe in to keep from loseing the lowend.

Last a good cold air intake like the Volant or the new Outlaw. There are many good systems, just make sure they don't take any hot air from under the hood.

After all that, you might have enough left for lunch at Burger King! :banghead:

Thanks everyone for the info. Snoman, who do you recommend for a supercharger? How reliable are they for everyday driving and pulling a 25 travel trailer? What other mods would I have to do? Would I need to run higher oct gas? Anyone try Raylar heads? What other mods would a guy have to do. If you're spending the money, heads or supercharger for performance and reliablity. I can't do both.

Guy on LS1Tech is building one hell of an 8.1 right now with Raylar parts. His name is TieRod. He had his 2500HD running a 12.93@101 in the 1/4.

I recommend a tune, cam, rocker arms, valve springs, and long tube headers. Unfortunately this will cost around $2000 but it will give you a major kick in the pants. Probably drop better than 2 sec. in the 1/4 mile.
