Todays truck market

we all prefer GM, but seriosuly, what do YOU think is the most competitive truck on the market?

a local nissan dealer advertised a 2WD titan 5.6L for under 20K(incentives).....you could get the tow package, or off road package for only 2K more if teh other options were the same....and you can't get ANY Z66 ot Z71 chevy truck for under 22K, even WITH incentives.

anyway you loook at it, that's alot of truck for the money.

The nissan is nice but I choose a GM because I know which one I'd rather buy parts for and work on. I do 99% of all my own work. A GM is the cheapest and easiest to work on, maintain, most aftermarket(fords gettin there) just all around better IMO To me it would be worth the extra cash for a chevy.

oh and don't forget resale value. Isn't that why you bought your camero. A investment?

My never-humble opinion spewed forth proclaims that....... well, 75-cents and my opinion will buy a cup of cheap coffee that is evacuated from the body within a short period anyway.

Since I am here anyway....... if buying a truck for the short-term.... herewith I declare that Toyota may be the one to buy. Reliable, good resale value, will do what most... I repeat, most truck buyers want a truck to do.

However, for those buying a truck for the long haul, who intend to keep the critter for a lengthy period, as the udder poster proclaimed, there are many benefits to buying a Chevy.

Parts availabilty in the future, the cost of the parts, being able to get parts and repairs even in isolated areas, the Chevy has many benefits.

As I peek out the windshield at the trucks motorvating down the road here in the salt/rust belt I see very few older Toyota/Nissan/etc pick-em-up trucks. What I do see are Chevys and Fords.

I do wish that GMC would be less concerned about CEO pay, executive-class benefits and bonuses etc. and be more concerned with quality control. How about working on one part at a time and perfecting it?

Then, get the workers/union to realize their jobs may be in peril as more and more Americans shun "American" trucks and migrate to Toyota et al. In the past I worked on a non-vehicle assembly line and witnessed too many workers not caring about the quality of their work. Perhaps that firm would still be in existence if the workers had cared about the quality of the products built. Then, again...... if the management/owners had been willing to share the wealth...........

But, when the ruling class makes more in ONE YEAR than the typical worker makes in a lifetime of labor there is little concern for the long-term. Let the firm fold..... the top-of-the-pyramid people are set for life.

A long-winded reply that veered off-topic a bit but vehicle quality does affect purchasing decisions. My 2004 Silverado is the first GMC product I have ever owned. Prior rides were Toyota, Nissan and Honda..... all of which were very reliable. Parts were expensive, though, and those "imports" (a gray area what with American firms owning parts of what were once foreign firms and with manufacturing plants within the USA etc) were not "rugged" enough, in my opinion, to last as long as my Silverado may possibly (hopefully) last.

Sadly, I am not entirely satisfied with the fit-and-finish and build quality of the Silverado. I have doubts as to the quality of various components. Hopefully, the critter will be durable. Time will tell.

Sure hope that 10 years down the road I don't regret not grabbing that Toyota I almost bought.

I agree with obbop on the GM quality dilemma. I love my Suburban and in general have enjoyed my Chevy experiences on other vehicles. But the Toyotas I have owned just don't rattle. Sometimes boring=reliable is a good thing.

After owning a Subaru Legacy - the least modifiable car in the world - I have come to appreciate is the vast aftermarket options available for the GM trucks. While I might have to yank out some parts in the future, I know I will be able to get them.

From a design standpoint, I can't believe I'm saying this, I think Ford has an edge right now. With the long product lifecycles GM and Ford have on the truck lines, maybe this will flip flop near the 2006/2007 lineup. But the NBS run right now is a little long on the tooth.

wow, I just got a close up of an 05 F-150 at cabelas... loaded FX4, and all I have to say is WOW, WHAT A PIECE OF ANGRY MONKEY DUNG

the inteior is so incredibly cheap. It mimicks that of the 90 silverado, you knock on the dash and you get this horrible hollow platsic noise. the door panels are WORSE than the 90 silverado, those have carpeted panels, what does the new F-150 FX4 have? HARD PLASTIC!

I saw the MSRP of 37,000 and then thought of the 2006 BMW 3 series I just saw for 29,000-43,000( I went to a BMW club pre-release preview), and gotta say, the new BMW 3 IS A STEAL over that. In fact the thing to do with the 37K would be buy a base 2006 325i, and a nice 98 or 99 chevy truck with the money left over, if you go on sticker price alone.

I think they look badass. And the ex-cab windows that roll down are just freaking cool. I'll never understand the sliding thing in the overhead console though.

I agree with you there. I hated the interior (had a VW feel to it), which is one of the very few reasons why I didn't buy one.

I understand your love of BMW's, but how do you compare a car to a pickup when trying to justifying price points? I think I may be missing your point there.

I'm with supurban and obbop I still have my 87 Mustang and I plan on keeping my 03 Silvy for at least as long. The aftermarket possibilities are endless! Parts availability is another excellent point by obbop.

I really love the fact that you can pretty much drop any engine in the bay from the LS1, LQ4, LQ9,LS6 if you really want to get nuts I think even the LS2 could be dropped in there and maybe even the new LS7 from the 06 Z06 Vette!

If you can't stop modifying your ride then the GM line of trucks are hard to beat.

actually if you think about it, they aren't too far off, IMHO. both are purpose made automobiles, and BMW's are overpriced, I've never met a BMW enthusaist that wouldn't agree. but the fact you are getting a stereotypical "high end status car" with wondeful interor quality for LESS than a top end truck, that coast costs 37,000 you'd expcect that they do a better job considering there isn't too much interior space to begin which, so having a nicer interor would be cheaper than a sedan, right?

and as I said, you could have that car AND a older GM truck with equal interior material. then you'd olnly have to drive the truck when you wanted?

I was comparing in pure bang for buck, considering that 99% of truck buyer use their truck in car-type duties 99% of the time. you you are one of the 1%, like several people on this site, that changes things a bit.......did I explain my point better this time?

I do not want to change the subject of this thread but wanted to add my 2 cents worth on the comment. I use my truck as a daily driver and it spends more time on the road then being driven off road but I drive it like a truck whether the road is paved or not. That is just somthing you cannot do in a car. I would consider a bmw to be a sunday go to church car and the rest of the time drive a truck because it will hold up better.

heck yes it will, and it'll cost you 50% less in maintence.....but not everyone wants a truck 100% of the time. trucks are great, but I enjoy :D some of the time also.
