NV-4500 5 Speed clatter/grinding

I realize there aren't many of us with newer 2500HD or 3500 truck running 5 speed sticks. However, do any of you that are have a grinding sound from the tranny. Dealer says they don't have a fix for it and I think I've just got a sorry service department.

Clatters in fifth empty and most other gears if towing or taking off fast.

Towed a loaded stock trailer in fourth gear and it had a grinding sound the whole trip. This is on a 2005 truck with only 8000 miles.

Any of your tech guys here of this?

I just had mine in, as you probably read. The dealer won't do anymore and gave me a TSB. The TSB summed up basically said, these are heavy duty transmission that will chatter, make wierd noises, shift hard and feel like POS's, went on and covered basically any complaint you can have of the tranny and chalked up to "it is normal characteristics." It is a print out and like 5 pages long, I don't have a scanner and don't really want to type it all up, when I get home I will get the number off it for you.

I do remember the wording for the chatter was along the lines of "the transmission will make chattering noises due to the gap between piston's firing. This creates moment where there is spike of force everytime a piston fires and cause the gears to chatter." I forget the exact wording, but that is close, probably off on the technical mumbo gumbo.

Mine has developed two new noises this week, it squeals when I first start out in 2nd, sounds like clutch slipping I think. It made this noise just before they replaced the tranny, so I am getting worried about that again. It also makes a loud springy, metal clang noise everytime I shift it in 3rd from second. This noise is made when I shift, when I have the clutch pushed all the way in, not when I am letting the clutch out. It has always made these noises off and on since the new clutch, but not often enough to duplicate it at the dealer, but now it happens everytime.

Oh well, I got the warranty, if it dies it is their problem, getting tired of hearing, "that is normal." Will b*tch about it when I take it in for the parking break recall.

My dad's got a 97 NV4500 and it doesn't make any weird noises or shift funny.  Sounds like a load of BS to me.

Ya, I know AgTeacher posted someting similar about his previous truck being fine, and quiet. My uncle has two trucks in his construction fleet, 94 3500 with a 5.7, and a 97 3500 Diesel with the tranny. Never had to do anything but replace clutches, and they are at about 150,000 and 200,000 miles, get the crap beat out of them and they are still quiet, shift nicely. Don't know why they have so many problems with the new trucks since they are the same trannies and everything.

As for noises from the tranny:

"Many transmission noises are created by the firing pulses of the engines. Each firing pulse creates a sudden change in angular acceleration at the crankshaft. These changes can be reduced with clutch damper springs and dual mass flywheels. However some speed variationn will make it through to the transmission. This can create noise as the various gears will accel and decel against eaach other because of required clearances."

LOL :chevy: maybe in a 4 banger, V-8's running under load should not have much of a gap in firing pulse, or even at highway speed ~2500rpm.

"Rattling or grinding (not to be confused with missed shifting noises) type noises usually occur while operating the engine at low RPM's (lugging the engine). This can occur while accelerating from a stop or while operating at low RPMs while under a load."

Anyways...there are some exerts, and all i can say is this is a BS cope-out by GM.

It is along the same lines as GM's BS answer to piston slap problems. They have a production quality control problem that they do not want to admitt or fix as the cost of it it will yeild even lower returns to stock holders that are already upset now.
