Defective fuel injectors on 2002

Have a 2002 Tahoe 5.3 40K miles, and recently the service engine light came on, took it in to the dealer for service.

 

Dealer said the injectors are dirty and need to be cleaned, , ,pay the dealer $200 to clean them. Next day the SES light returns. Take back to dealer and they now tell me that the injectors are plugged and need to be changed at the tune of $ 1000. I leave unfixed not happy

 

I get home and did some investigating on the net and found that certain areas in the country (my area is one of those areas) that uses reformulated fuel with ethanol have a huge fuel injector problem. Evidently it only happens on GM injectors and the fuel companies are blaming faulty GM injectors and GM is blaming the fuel manufactures for the problem. From what I read, I tend to believe the fuel people because it only happens on GM injectors nobody elses.

 

Wondering if anyone else has had this issue? I have already called GM to voice my opinion and they claim they will be calling me today to see if they will cover the cost to replace them. I told them that this is not a case were something wears out and needs to be replaced, this is something that is defective because no way should fuel injectors go bad within 40K especially at a cost of 1000 to repair.

Have you tried a 1/2 tank of fuel with a couple of cans of good fuel injector cleaner added and take it out and "run" it some?

If you drive with plugged injectors you could destroy your catalytic convertors. My '99 had 2 plugged injectors last fall and the dealer wanted about $1000.00 to replace them. I had them cleaned and tested at a diesel injector shop for $200.00 and they are fine. My fuel pump was grinding itself to death and there were fine metal fillings blocking the injectors.

You have no way of knowing how or if they really cleaned them either. I would not worryabout frying CAT as it takes a while to toast it and with 40 K miles on a 2002 it is still covered under emision warranty and for than fact so are the injectors because it is certified to be emmisson complaint for 5yr/50k miles and if injectors are plugged or defective the engine is not emission compliant and GM has to pick up the bill. Time for another dealer.

Well GM customer service called today and denied my request to have ot fixed under some type of warranty. Said that the injectors are not part of any emission warranty and needlees to say I am not happy with them.

 

I will try one other dealer to see if the Service manager can fandangle the paperwork to get it covered. This is my 11 GM vehicle (new everytime) and this is how they treat repeat customers...

They do not get paid as much for warranty work as they do when you foot the bill. Someone is bs'ing someone because that vehical is supposed to be emissions compliant got 5yr/50k and GM warrants that for sale. If injectors fail or are defiective it is not meeting emissions and needs to be fixed. Can you get a emissions test for further amunition? (not at dealer)

ONLY the Light duty trucks with the HEAVY DUTY MOTOR have the 5/50 warranty. I argued with them what is considered a light duty vehicle with a HD motor and they could not answer me.

 

I asked if they meant that a S-10 would have the 6 liter? or the Tahoe with the big block? all of which is not possible. Again all they could tell me is that the Tahoe with the 5.3 is a light duty motor.

That is BS because they are all 5/50K. (in California it is longer yet) My Toyota was and my wifes LD 4 cyl 2000 Cherokee was 5/50K too. The 3/36 he is telling you is bumper to bumper not emmisions. Read your emisions manual that came with truck. LD/HD only sets emission levels not the length of the warranty on it. It is missleading because a LD engine can see HD use in output but emmision level are tighter because it is in a truck under 8600 GVW. They have to be certified to be complaint for at least 5/50k to be fed emmison compliant and be sold in the 49 states.
