Just bear in mind that if you have problems with injectors out of warranty it will be very expensive to repair and factor that into your purchase price. Yes they may be okay for a while but if you pay too much for truck and they go bad later it will cost you a lot of coin to fix it.

Also bear in mind that the above poster is a diesel hater...and the 2001 trucks are covered under the 200K injector warranty extension, so that would likely be the general's coins.

Possibly but it is not a sure thing and it will not help you on the tanny or rest of things. The fact that they offered that extended warranty to some tells you that there is a potenail problem and for what it will likely cost you for a used oil burner of unknown history, you could likely buy a new gas truck with no warranty issues and they will be worth more a few year for now because it will only be a few years old instead of 6 years old. The days of diesel fuel being cheaper than gas are likely over too as for the last 8 month here anyway it has been 20 to 40 cents more per gallon which further muddies the equation.

um if i break 200,000 miles ill be surprised...close to it but not over.

fuel cost isnt an issue for me. ill have an aux tank to carry either offroad fuel or on road bought in bulk.

snoman do you have anything educated you can tell me or for some reason are just trashing the longest living motor in a truck?

anyone that owns this model year have anything to say...thanks for your answers so far.

other than possible injectors (already covered above) the 2001 duramax / allison is a solid combo.

Why do you have to get nasty? I spellout worse case senerios and if you are prepared for them and they never happen, great! But if I tell you like others, no problems, good deal and then you get a big engine or tranny bill (because nothing will be cheap to fix) you may get upset. I would rather warn someone about the possibilties and be wrong than tell them all is fine and be wrong about that because if you are prepared for the worst and it never comes that is far better than not being prepared for it and it does come. Used trucks are a crap shoot and if the "dice" roll wrong it canl be a very expensive game.

FIL has an '02, and the only thing that has gone wrong so far was a tube off the turbo slipped off (vacuum?). Anyway, if just took the turbo out of the equation, truck still ran, but not great. Once he got it fixed, he has had no issues since. The Duramax/Ally is a strong, long living combo.

ok, ill be nice, what truck do you reccomend snoman?

I'll answer that for him. A big block gasser with a supercharger and 4.11 or 4.56 gears. Haha, just messing with you sno...but tell me if i'm wrong. :fume:

I work at a Gm dealership, and beside the injectors we really don't see many problems with the Duramax. The only Allison problem that I have seen is the park neutral safety switch. New updated switch and pigtails takes care of that. We have only done 10-12 of those in the last few years-and we are in a farming community and see a LOT of diesels.

I say if the price is right, get it. Diesels hold their value better, run longer and get better fuel mileage.

169000 and still rolling......

I got the lopey Idle.......or is that dopey Idle! Cleaned the injectors that helped for a few thousand miles.....FPR time

other than that this thing is a working fool.....I pull 10 to 14000 almost every weekend and never had a problem with the duramax/Allison combo. just had the injectors checked and all well with'n specs.......

As for Sno: instead of negetive things why not say nothing...fine you are a hater but I don't see you talking about this or that the gasser has problems with.....since Gm doesn't make the fuel rail or injectors I don't see why they really needed to warranty the motor for an extra 140000 miles I mean take the stance of Ford it's the suppliers problem contact them......thats what my brother in law heard when his fuel rail had problems over at the other place (oh he traded it in a week later 6.0 :P ) It's all about keeping you coming back to buy the next truck from the general!

If it's a good deal...do a carfax check on it and buy it...you won't be disappointed

:P
