Xfer case shaft noise

Noticed the other day when in 4WD when I slow down to stop I can hear a sqweeking from the Xfer Case. Put in in 2Whi and turned the shaft by hand and it does the squeeking noise. Looks like the rubber gasket thingy on the end is making the noise. Anyone else have this???? Also Truck makes a horrible feelable and loud clunk going into 4Wlo, moving or not.

I had replaced the rear output shaft seal on the transfer case once at around 90k and I'm going to do it again this weekend at 142K. Mine didn't squeek but it did leak. When I pull the driveshaft, there is Atrak fluid behind the seal so that should be giving it enough lubrication to not squeal. Sounds like yours is dry.

 

Check your fluid in the T-case. Just fill till it overflows. If you want to replace the seal, it is easy.

 

You should not have to drain the tcase for this. I only got about quarter cup of fluid when I changed mine.

 

Put a chalk mark on the tcase, driveshaft, and rear pinion to mark position of driveshaft for reinstall.

 

Remove 4 bolts at rear universal joint.

 

Slide driveshaft forward enough to pull it away and backwards out of the tcase. If you have to hit it with a hammer to break it loose, DON'T hit the ring around the driveshaft!

 

Pull seal. I used a seal puller but you could probably get it out with a screwdriver as long as you are replacing the seal.

 

Install seal. I used a peice of PVC to install it. Be careful not to wipe the grease around the seal.

 

Grease the slip yoke with a good waterproof grease. Make sure you cover the splines well with grease. This helps the driveline clunk issue.

 

Install driveshaft into tcase making sure the chalk marks line up.

 

Install 4 bolts at rear universal.

 

It should take no more than a half hour once the truck is raised. The second time around should be about 5 minutes for me

 

As for the clunk into 4wd, mine makes an audible clunk when it shifts but I'd hardly call it A HORRIBLE sound. If the radio is playing, I cannot hear it. Are you sure it's not coming from the Universal Joint??? Mine squeaked prior to replacement at 120K

You only got a quarter cup of fluid? Thats what happend when I went to change my fluid the other day, I'm a bit worried if thats all that was in mine, I did fill it back up till it overflowed but where did that stuff go? I can't see it leaking anywhere...

You only got a quarter cup of fluid?  Thats what happend when I went to change my fluid the other day, I'm a bit worried if thats all that was in mine, I did fill it back up till it overflowed but where did that stuff go?  I can't see it leaking anywhere...

I really didn't have to put much back into it and mine was leaking over the undersiide. Maybe a cup or two. There is a bushing behind the seal that does a pretty good job of sealing too. I think the fluid stays relatively low until use when it ends up getting splashed everywhere inside.
