2004 GMC 2500HD CLUNKING SOUND

Recommended Posts

I'm sure that somebody out there can point me in the right direction with this sound that my truck has. It comes from the engin compartment and is basically a clunking sound. I can also feel it somewhat in the sterring wheel.

Another sound I have when turning into a parking space or back up, is a sharp clinking sound.

Any ideas??

Thanks!!

Actually... I have the same problem with my 03. I came on tonight to post about it to get some input and you beat me to it, lol. I'm not sure if it is the same clunk, but ill give it a shot.

Like you said, only when im going slow. When im in a tight spot doing a lot of back and forth to turn around or something i notice it, also when im going real slow, like 0-maybe 15 mph it does it, sounds like something in the front end, but then again i also feel as though it might be coming from the middle of the truck, some sort of exhaust rattle/clunk maybe.

Or like you said, when turning into a parkng spot or a sharp turning area. Does this sound like the same relative problem?

I'm thinking of taking it to the dealer to check out, i bought the truck used with 33,000 miles on it so i only have a 90 day warrenty  i want to get every single bug that i hear/feel/see out while i still can. Should i take it in or not bother... Let me know what you do, if you would glthorne.

Sounds like the same sound. I've got about 1200 more miles until service time and then I'll bring it up. I'll let ya know.

But, until then, if anybody out there knows what this problem sound is or how it is to be fixed, please let Jester & I know!!

Thanks!

Intermedient steering shaft clunk.  I had my steering shaft replaced today under warranty at 9K miles

2002 2500HD, 4x4 crew cab, 8.1 with the full box and 75000 mi.

I think I have the "clunk" in the steering shaft. I noticed it about a year ago.

Did the shaft replacement work?? Do you know what the part costs ?

Your clunking sound is coming from the mid-shaft in your steering collum. I had the same problem on a 2000 and on my current 04" HD. The dealership can replace the mid-shaft or they may inject grease into the fitting between the shafts. I've had both done. The replacement shaft has worked fine. The grease didn't last very long and I was back at the dealership with the same comlaint.
