hello all,

i have a 98 jimmy and the last couple of weeks have had some problems with my windshield wipers not working. i have checked the electrical plug and cleaned it and resealed it so no moisture can get in but, they only work sometimes. it sounds as if the motor is working but nothing happens when you turn the switch on. is it possible the gears could be worn out?

any help would be appreciated as it is pouring down rain in northern alberta.

cheers

When its not working try and wiggle the connector at the wiper module(under the hood, bolted on to the motor). If the wipers begin to work you most likey have a bad module. Its a common for the printed circuit to crack at the connector.

I had a '92 Pickup that had issues with the wipers. When you needed them most, they wouldn't work. I found I could smack the motor with a screwdriver handle while the wiper switch was on and it would work until the next time it rained. I read on the 'net that it was a bad circuit board. I pulled the board off the motor (very easy to do) and sure enough, the solder joints for the main connector were cracked. I reflowed the solder and everything worked great again. If you're handy with a soldering iron (iron, NOT gun!), or know someone who is, do it yourself and save the money instead of buying a new board or motor.

There has been a recall that covers the problem.

It seems that the circuit board has some solder joints that crack.

This can/will result in intermittent and eventually permanent failure of the wipers to work.

Go to the above website and after following the links to recalls for vehicles you can type in the info on your truck and see the actual recall.

The dealership will replace the board and reseal the cover as part of the recall.

There should be no cost to you for the recall.

I advise saving the website as a favorite for tracking recalls for all other vehicles too. :chevy:
