Nav System differences - Lux, no Lux

Recommended Posts

After a lot of reading on Nav units, I find there's a Lux HU that matches with a Lux amp and a non-Lux setup with a non-Lux (premium) amp. I understand the Lux setup has better tone controls and may sound better but some suggest if adding amps (sub etc) go with the non-Lux.

From pictures I notice some Nav units have buttons on the right side and some do not (i.e part #s 15204335, 15230099). What's the difference in the functions of these units? Which one is best?

The ones without buttons on the right are '04 and later Touchscreen control models. As far as I know this is the only difference (besides LUX/nonLUX) between the units. They are interchangeable.

Looks like a couple of buttons on the right are for zoom in/out. It also has a "joy stick" directional pad in the lower left instead of a knob. I saw one that supposedly came from an '04 something so this may be an '05 change. I'll go for the bigger TS.

The HU needs to be paired with matching amp.

LUX HU w/ LUX amp

NON-LUX w/ NON-LUX amp

I added the 05 lux touch screen and amp to a 03 Tahoe. Works great!!

How do you know if you have lux or non-lux? I have an 03 Yukon XL with single cd rd,s bose, rear dvd, rear passenger stereo controls, etc from factory. I want to at least add the factory xm, but may go with nav as well.

Unless your GMC is a Denali, you probably have non-lux. To be sure, look on the inside door panel of your glove box, and read your RPO codes. If you see 'Y91' or 'Y92,' your system is lux. If you don't (which you probably won't), your system is non-lux.
