Another Tire Question

What you guys think, I'm looking for good all around traction, wet #1. and out of tires out there these two seem to rate #1

265 70 16

Bridgestone Dueler HL 195.99

Goodyear Fortera 148.00

Prices are at retail firestone/Goodyear. I'm sure I can get better pricing

Tirerack/Discount tire are the same company

These will go on factory 16 wheels, I'm a little nrvous about Goodyears, due to the fact that the ones i have now are crap and all of the reports say the same no good for wet traction after 18-20k

If you are talking about the Dueler HL Alenza, then yes. Great street tire, great for wet roads. You didn't mention any mud or dirt roads, so I'm assuming you are strictly a street cruiser.

If, you do any dirt roads, then you might consider the Bridgestone AT/Revo. It is actually rated slightly higher for Cornering, Steering Response, and Ride Comfort than the Alenzas. Plus, you have the added benefit of being able to be assured of driving safely on dirt roads.

Not sure what you mean by: "Tirerack/Discount tire are the same company", however I'm a fan of support the local tire shop. I'd suggest getting the Bridgestones at the local Firestone shop. Certainly a big help when you have some problems.

Every Goodyear tire I have ever had in my life, including the factory installed ones on my wifes Impala are quiet when new, but get louder as the miles go on.

I say anything but Goodyear.

Obviously, it depends on your budget. I think though, you really need to be careful when going "cheaper" especially with a 2.5 ton vehicle and its tires. You are in good company here. Nearly everyone at this board has had to buy and lay out $$$$$$$$$ for tires. We have ALL griped and complained about tire prices. Point is, we all go through this. Personally, Goodyear has let me down several years back, and I used to only use Goodyear.

How did it let me down? Well, had difficulty keeping the tires balanced, they grew noisy in spite of religiously rotating the tires. At one time, I could all but just throw Goodyears on and forget them.

Basically, I was disgusted at the truck. I then discovered Tirerack and began reading the surveys and reviews. Went to the local Firestone dealer who told me of the 30 day "try me" warranty and I did. And that is where I am now. Every truck we have goes through this one dealer and they ride very well on the highway and do great in a wet pasture.

Regarding Discount Tire. Very good company. They are the ones who I used to always buy from. However, I would love to see some resources demonstrating that Discount Tire and TireRack are partners or are related. When you click on the list of installers in your area at the TireRack site, not one Discount Tire dealer is listed.

I'm leaning more to the Dueler HL's because I've had them before and loved them, I'll see if I can get documentation on tirerack and Discount,

The reason I said this is Goodyear and Firestone said this when I gave them a price quote from them, to see if they can match or beat their prices. they said that they are the same company :sigh: not sure if they BOTH are trying just to get a sale or something else.

The guy is just trying to make a sale and you can't blame him for that. For the most part, in my experiences with the internet and with the local dealers, Discount Tire, the local Firestone/Bridgestone dealer, and Tirerack are all very reputable and good. Discount Tire and the local Firestone/Bridgestone dealer have to report to their respective mothership. Tirerack knows good and well that the internet can be its friend or enemy, so its services tend to be good.

A countertop guy's opinion of who is better is another story, though. The competition can be mean and fabricated stories and opinions can flow out of the droid's mouth.

One suggestion... and I'm not sure how you can time this. During certain times of the year, there is an inventory blow-out on tires. You can save a couple of hundred bucks total for all four tires if you time things right. In all my years of driving, I have never quite figured it out as to when. If your current tires can give you more time, you might spend this time trying to figure that out, especially if $$$$ is a major issue for you and you don't want to compromise on the tires.

I've never had Bridgestones but they have a great reputation on here.

I have Goodyear Forteras now. Not 16's though, 20's, but I bought Forteras based on the reviews (quiet, good traction, good wear) and have been VERY happy for 37000 miles. Tires still have great tread and I have not noticed any increase in noise or loss of traction.

I ask for opinions all the time to get a base line but keep in mind that opinions are always heavily weighted to the LAST experience.

As far as price goes, I went to Tirerack and got an price. Then I called Sears and got them to match the price. Best of both worlds, lower cost and country wide "local" representation.

I know, I've seen sales that make me wish I needed tires. I don't need tires at this time, but by spring or next summer, or if the price is right. i've only got about 18k on the factory bar ditch tires,

As for the price of the duelers, I could get new wheels w/falken tires for just 200 more.

For what it's worth, I just put four Bridgestone Dueler Revos on my car for $740 out the door (including tax (@ 8.25%), mounting and balancing, but no extended warranty). I've had them on for less than a week, but so far I like them (they replaced non-Revo Duelers that I was happy with).

I think that the Revos are among the higher priced Bridgestone tires--and mine were in a slightly bigger size: 265/17. Thus, I think with a little negotiating/shopping around you can save a couple of hundred bucks (even if they don't stock them, most places can custom order the tires and get them the next day).

Good luck.

OK now I'm real confoosed, I called local firestone to find out why the price was sooo much higher than everybody else, and the Dueler HL's are 552.00 out the door, but the Dueler HL Alenza is 1100.00, same tire different tread.

I guess it's who you talk to.

I see your in Tx... got any Costco's around your area? My 265 LT Revo's were $150 each before an $80 discount from Costco... They run that same tire sale about twice year.

I have over 25k on my clock with the stock Goodyears. I just came back from a trip to my deer lease north of Ballinger, TX. It rained all the way up until around 20 miles from Lubbock. The Goodies were nothing short of squirrely in the rain. I had a death grip on the steering wheel the whole way! I think I'll be replacing them with Michelins soon.
