Cloth vs. Leather Seats

Just wanted some opinions here-I have leather in my Z-71, but drove a truck this past weekend with the dark grey cloth captain's chairs and really liked it.

I was curious about your opinions for my next truck purchase because I've never owned a truck with cloth interior.

Thanks!

I have leather in my truck. I never really liked leather but when I found the truck I wanted it had leather seats, and the price was too good to pass up.

I've grown to love the leather, and my wife LOVES the heated seats. Shes constanly cold so even if its 80 degrees out side she has the heated seats on.

The leather is so much easier to keep clean its worth it for that reason alone. I hunt and fish alot and was worried I'd ruin the seats with mud or blood and guts. I swear the seats have Teflon in them, clean up is a breeze.

The only thing I wish I could change is the center console you get with the leather seats. I'd much rather have the third seat in the front of my truck.

Love the leather, easier to clean, and a lot more comfortable then the cloth seats.

I have the LT with heated seats, and for plowing snow in the winter, it makes all the diffrence in the world. I go out in shorts and a t-shirt.. As long as I don't have to go out, it is nice and comfortable.

I had a z71 with leather and had to have the vinyl replaced on the sides of the seats, the upholstry shop said this was common with gm leather seats. I have a hd now with cloth seats and this is what i noticed; easier to slide in and out of truck with leather and cloth isn't cold in the Alaska winter mornings like leather unless you have heated leather seats, which the same shop said they do a lot of warranty work for the dealers in town replacing the heater elements in the seats. Leather seats get mighty hot in the summers also, but when I purchase again it will be heated leather seats, don't have to worry about the seats being hot in the summer since I moved from Louisiana to Alaska.

I have heated leather and my previous truck had the same. Personally I would never go back to cloth. Comfort-wise there is not a whole lot of difference, but the heating element makes a great back massager for long trips and feels nice and cozy in the winter. The major advantage is the cleaning maintenence. I have allergies and dust is my worst enemy. After a hunting or fishing trip with cloth seats, they make look clean, but are full of dust and pollen. The leather just wipes right off, nothing absorbed or held in the material. Also the water just beads off. You can climb in with snow all over and not have to worry about the seat soaking up the water.

I prefer leather but cloth isn't bad. THe worst thing about cloth is the violent static shocks I get in the dry winter months. That reason alone I look for leather when I buy a vehicle.

I like cloth seats for the simple fact that GM is too cheap to get some leather that will not crack and wear out within a year. If you get the charcoal colored seats, they do not show stains, and mine looked like new after 4+ years of use.

I also have leather seats in mine, and like everyone has said, they are much easier to keep clean... One other nice thing about the leather... Leather wont keep smells like cloth will. If you smoke or dirty cloths from work whatever, the leather wont soak those smells up as easily.

I prefer cloth mainly because if I sit on a leather seat for more than 30-45 mins, I stick to the seat, plus the cloth is more comfortable for longer trips. The leather may be easier to clean, but as far as smells go, there isn't much that a rug doctor (ulphulstry (spelling?) attachment) and a little febreeze can't take care of.

Dude, stop driving naked and this will no longer be an issue

He can also just slather about 1/2 pint of babyoil on his backside, and he won't stick to anything he sits on anymore, regardless of his attire.

I used to hate leather, until I bought my '02...Now I doubt I'll buy one without it. If only for two reasons. 1.) As stated above, they're incredibly easier to clean. 2.) Also like said above, my '92 has cloth, and I would get a 6" long blue flame of static doom coming off the tip of my finger every time I got out of my truck in the cold and dry winter months (when I lived in CO). It's not so bad here, but man...You could kill a small marsupial with the static discharge of plush seats on some days...This was somewhat alleviated by spraying the entire interior of the truck with Static Guard, but that didn't last all that long.

I'll stick with my leather keester-heaters for as long as I can afford them.

My truck has cloth seats but it will eventually get a Katzkins leather upgrade w/velour centers (w/seat heaters and likely with that nifty lumbar mentioned elsewhere on the site). I like the cloth as far as not getting too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter, which is where leather's weaknesses are imo, at least unless you take a couple simple precautions-

1) Seat heater (needed for winter)

2) window shades when parked in the sun keep it off the seats, so no more toastin your buns when you hop in.

The nice thing about the velour centers is that they don't stick to you like the normal leather surfaces do. Our Malibu has the leather / ultralux (velour wannabe) interior w/seat heaters, and on cold winter days it's tough to beat!

If I had to do it again, I would go back with cloth. I had cloth in my '03 and my '05 has leather. I really don't dislike the leather and I got an awesome deal on the truck so I bought it straight off the lot.

PROS: The leather is easier to keep clean (it shows more trash in the seams vs. cloth though) and it is easier to slide in and out.

CONS: The leather gets HOT in the summer (even with tinted windows and sunshades while parked) and your legs "stick" to the seat if you are wearing shorts.
