engine ran in the red area: any damage?

I was driving my 1997 Pontiac Bonneville on the highway when all of a sudden the check gages light comes on. I look down and see my engine temperature gauge is in the red! I drove about another minute before I could pull off. The vehicle didn't start at first, but did after about 1 hour. I think I have a heater hose leak of somekind, as all the antifreeze is gone. The engine wasn't smoking when I opened the hood.

 

What are the chances damage occured to the engine?

What engine is in it? Most of the v6's that would probably be in it are fairly durable, so odds are probably pretty slim that damage was done if it wasn't driven for too long.

I have the 3.8. My mechanic is going to do a compresion check tomorrow, but he noticed antifreeze in the oil.

Lots of problems with intakes leaking on those. Not simple, but not as bad as head gaskets, which is pretty rare on those, even when overheated.

So, if the compression checks out ok, what are the chances the vehicle will eventually burn oil in the next couple of months, which would be a bad sign yes?

 

My mechanic says that I might also have a melted egr problem on the upper plastic manifold. I'll know more in a day or so.

Yeah, pretty common. Haven't seen any engine problems as a result of coolant in the oil... unless you've driven it that way for a long time.
