Cant tell if AC bad smell TSB was done??

I had a long list of things fixed at the dealer today, it was like pulling teeth. The AC" bad smell" TSB was supposedly done but the high blower never came on by itself and never came on after the truck ('02 SD) was shut off. Can you see the module and relay with wiring splices under the hood that were supposed to be replaced? There's no smell so far so I think that they cleaned and coated the evaporator. I know that they ordered the parts just not sure that they did the whole TSB. How can I tell?

It's not put under the hood. It is wired directly into the blower power/ground wires, so it has to be somewhat close to the blower motor, under the dash. You should be able to see that they tapped into the blower wiring.

The Electronic Evaporator Dryer will activate when the ambient temperature near the module is above 16° C (60° F) when the vehicle is started up.

 

Approximately 30 minutes after the vehicle has been turned off, the blower will activate for 10 seconds every 10 minutes for 2 hours unless the vehicle is restarted.

 

If a restart occurs, the Electronic Evaporator Dryer module will reset automatically. This on/off blower activation will dry the evaporator core and case reducing the chance of reoccurring A/C odor.

 

The Electronic Evaporator Dryer is self fused and has a battery rundown protection feature that inactivates the dryer if voltage drops below 12.5 volts.

Wow...learn something new every day--thanks for the tidbit, GM-Tech! I guess that would explain why my A/C has been smelling pretty putrid these days...I mean, it gets pretty hot in the summer where I live, so I have the A/C running all the time; until recently, my A/C never stunk pretty bad every time I had to turn it back on after having it off for a while.

It doesn't exist on any new body style trucks. It's an add-on gizmo installed by the service department... and a very expensive gizmo at that! It's around $400 for the part alone.

 

Some of the newer vehicles have this afterblow function built into the HVAC control head if the vehicle has auto air and it is not enabled by default but can be turned on with a Tech 2. As far as I know the full size pickups and tahoe/suburban do not have this... yet. Trailblazer does as does Aurora and the new body style Malibu. Those are the only ones I know of for sure. There are probably others.

Thanks for all the info! I found the module under the dash by the blower motor and saw the sticker that's required on the firewall. I haven't heard the blower come on even once yet and they said that the old filters are not replaced as part of the TSB. Three days after it was done the smell came back! Not as bad as before and it seems to come and go. Mabye there's some bacteria on the old filters that starts to grow after a while. I'll change them.

Darn...no EED--and to add insult to injury, no cabin air filter on '04+ NBS...which means, "smelly air in my DXL when I turn on A/C", followed by, "time to spray Lysol into the air vents"...oh well...

Well............I'll be darned. An automatic blower, they think of everything these days. I used to be a service advisor for Cadillac many moons ago (1990). One of our biggest warranty complaints was the smelly A/C problem.

 

You could hit the vents with Ozium till the cows came home and the problem always returned. The solution as it turns out, was to turn the A/C to vent for about 30 seconds before you shut the vehicle off. Worked like a charm. Had something to do with opening the doors and letting the air circulate. The problem with sharing this oh so great secret with the clients were most of them were too danged lazy to do it.

 

I bought my Silverado new in 1990 and have always switched to vent before shutting down and the A/C has NEVER smelled. It just became habit, I usually don

't even realize that I'm doing it but works great.

All newer vehicles are prone to this condition. It's not any specific vehicle or model year. And not all people will smell it, even if it does exist. Personally, it'd have to be very strong for me to even notice it. My boss will go, "Yeah, that smells" and I don't smell squat.

 

I've also read that a woman has a sense of smell several times better than a man, and as it turns out, most of the complaints we get about this problem is from women, so perhaps that is true.

 

There's been times when I've dragged our cashier (female) out to car and said, "Smell this." :dupe: Just to be sure I wasn't just immune to whatever it was they were smelling.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
