Back in today for the brakes

I think the dealership has given up trying to figure out what's wrong. They had it all day and can't figure out what's causing the noise or why you can feel it in the brake pedal.

They decided to order a new drum and hub assembly, I'll have to go back when they get the parts........... :jester: This had better fix it! This will be the 18th trip I believe..................don't have time for all this poop.

I'm really thinking I am not meant to have a Silverado

I firmly believe that in this day and age, there will always be something going wrong with new vehicles. They jsut are not built as solid as they used to be, no matter how much money we spend on them. I'd trade my 99 Z71 for a 98 Z71 with the exact same milage anyday. The older stuff lasted.

Wow Lisa, you sure have had your share of problems and trips to the stealership. Give them a shot at changing out the brake drum, if that doesn't do it, try another dealership. Knock on wood, my 2000 Silverado has 85,000 miles on it, and has only been to the dealership for a recall once, and never a mechanical problem. I sure hope you get your truck squared away so you can enjoy it for a change. Good luck. MMM

I agree with you Ryan, they just don't make them like they used to. I just wish I was like one of the lucky ones that could brag about how great their truck is. I've heard a lot of people tell me they never had any problems, it sure isn't that way for me.

MMM let's hope this fixes it because I'm tired of all the trips. Just really losing hope I will ever have a time where I can say this is the best truck I ever owned.

I agree, new cars will always have some issues and that will be independent of brand too. But I feel the big issue with how the problems get fix is the people fixing it. Now wait a second before you start bashing me, give me a chance to explain. I am an over analyzing mechanical engineer with a serious car addiction, so when I have a problem with my truck I spend a lot of time figuring out what the problem is and how to solve it. Sometimes replacing the part with a new one is not the solution, sometimes redesigning the part needs to be done.

1st, the auto techs at the dealerships really don't have a lot of time to hone in on the problem and fix it. And, when the solution is modification, they are not permitted to perform what is necessary to solve the problem.

2nd, now for the bashing, I do believe that there are very good mechanics at many dealerships in the country, but I think the truly great ones are few and far between and its only going to get worse in the future. If you look at America as a whole, manufacturing and trade jobs are slowly going away, and parents don’t want their kids to grow up to be a tech, mechanic, machinist...etc. So there will be less qualified people to perform these jobs in the future. Just look around, how many people do you know that can change their own oil... not many (at least in my neck of the woods).

3rd, sometimes the engineers mess up, hell... during school 95% of the people had zero understanding about real world design and manufacturing, but they sure could crunch some math equations.

Anyway, enough of my rant, I hope they solve your problem.

No bashing here Jeff, I appreciate your opinion. I do agree, nowadays it's seems like most of the mechanics I've seen are a bunch of kids working on cars, probably because the mechanics don't make a whole lot of money. Maybe if they paid their mechanics a decent wage things would be different. I know if I found a dealership that could fix it correctly, I would keep going back to them.

I also have an appreciation for cars and I guess that's why I am so disgusted with the trips I've had to make for a lot of "silly" repairs. Back in the old days I could work on my car's myself...........except the big things. Can't tell you how many years I hung out in the garage with my brother rebuilding motors and putting cars back together. The good old days of the 350 with a 4bbl carberator (I miss that sound)

You're right about the designing end too. My ex Father in law told me when they come out with a first year model run, it is usually the best to buy. Once they look at the next year's model, they start to look at the vehicle to see where they can cut costs and save money.

Haven't heard anything on the parts yet, I'll just have to sit tight and keep my fingers crossed this will take care of it.

list off all problems you have had.

Blemished tailgate, AC not workin and brake noise are the 3 i can think of.

she has to go 8 times per problem.

Why eight times??????

If you are talking about the Lemon Law, in Michigan it is three times in two years for the same issue. Then you can send a 'Last Chance' Letter to the company (certified) and if not fixed start the process.

Couldn't have said it any better! The basics haven't change, but a LOT has changed in other areas. Besides having mechanical ability, one needs to be a network engineer (for the data communications between modules), electronics whiz, etc., etc.

GM pays 0.3 hrs (18 minutes!) for diagnosis time. How much time do you think a tech is going to spend on an intermittent electrical problem that occurs once or twice a WEEK. Or a noise that occurs once in a while. None, that's how much. He has a family to feed and a mortgage to pay too and if the problem is not readily apparent, its NPF and on to the next one.

Until techs are paid commensurate with their skill level, by the hour, and not by piece work and the number of cars they can crank out or uneeded "gravy" work they can sell you, it will not get any better.

The List:

Muffler - 5 times

Onstar - 2 times

Tailgate - 5 times

A/C - 1 time

Brakes - 4 times

TOTAL 18

The A/C still makes a lot of noise, but so I have been told that's the way it is so I have to live with that one. I think the dealer bs'd about replacing the blower motor...it's no different than what it was before.

Asepgrad98 You're right it is starting to sound like another saga. At least I don't feel my safety is threatened as it was with the 02. It just takes up so much time running back and fourth to the dealership.

Budone I am waiting for the parts on the brakes, if that doesn't solve the problem I just might do the lemon law, I really don't want to though.................I really want my Silverado :banghead:

GM Tech- My brother is a licensed mechanic and also has a diesel license. He has worked on motors all of his life, went to school so he could get licensed. He till this day cannot make a living "wrenching". Very sad because he is really good at it, but no one is willing to pay him a decent wage to do it. (no, I don't let him touch the truck because of the warranty...don't want to take a chance and "void" it)

He has a 94 Silverado, almost 200,000 miles on it....just through a another motor in though....I believe an LT 1 from a vette....could be wrong on that though.......he saves all of his motors from previous vehicles so he may have thrown something else in.

He also has a '70 R/T Challenger, 383 Magnum...all original......except he does change out the motor with a 440 for kicks and giggles, for fun as he says.

Hey I know the feeling, but sometimes ya just have to let go..... Tomorrow is my hearing on my truck.

Stupid me, this past week Chevy (so they said) FINALLY called me... I was so surprised in the message, I went to hit 'one' to hear the name again, and I hit' five' and deleted the message..... :dupe:
