Solid Front Axle Conversion

My buddy is taking the plunge and is junking all the front end set-up on his '05 Dmax for a solid axle conversion and leaf packs. Going with a Dana 70 w/ ARB up front. Now, i have a trailbuggy Jeep for Rubicon wheeling, but to take the blue torch to a new truck seems crazy. Its his $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and wants to build a more capable off-highway truck. Sure, solid front axle/leaf packs are IMO better that torsion or coils, but WTF??? I'd have a coronary chopping out all the OEM front end, ESPECIALLY on a daily driver.

 

Admittedly, it seems like a cool modification and the solid front axle will undoubtedly enhance off-highway performance, but there is a WTF?? factor i'm struggling with... So, anyone out there in 2500/3500 land seen a conversion like this on a NEW rig?

 

just wondering if i'm crazy to ask or it there are more out there with the same mod...

i wouldnt go with leaf packs if i were him, id stick with some coils with a 5 link set up like the dodge rams, those front ends are real solid, i agree the live axle is better for offroading but i mean the ifs isnt that bad... anyways here is a link where they did it on a 2500 suburban http://www.fourwheeler.com/techarticles/55398/

There's a bunch of guys on fullsizechevy.com and pirate4x4.com that do this to newer rigs. They all say parts alone costs around 9k.

 

No thank you for me! I'll just wait to see if the rumors about a SFA in the 07 HD's ever comes true.

Pretty stupid IMO. Unless hes going to do some hardcore wheelin' the IFS will work just fine. That brings us to another point,if hes going to do some serious wheelin',why would he be doing it in a big ass diesel P/U?

i agree to a certain extent, i know the dodge ram i used to have (2003 2500) was a very capable rig due to the front end build.. everyitng from steering to the links, i would feel much more safe in a dodge with a solid front than an IFS, We did a lot with the dodge as far as hauling things offroad that a smaller truck wouldnt be able to do and it go the job done with minimal effort...Its just a preference thing i guess, the GM has a MUCH nicer interior than the Dodge or the Ford especially, this i like, but i mean the IFS is a little loose for me in offroad situations.. tho its a charm on the streets. If i was in his position i would have picked up a dodge 2500 cc LB or that new megacab, very capable trucks, .. their transmissions still suck though

I have a an x-cab short bed 2500HD,its not nearly the perfect off road rig,but its also pretty capable. I don't have the need for two trucks or a dedicated off road machine,so I use what I have. This guy seems like hes wasting a bunch of money to make his truck into an off road warior,when it will NEVER be as capable as a CJ,landcruiser or such. He could spend the 9-10 grand it'll cost for the conversion and build a sweet rig that'll do things his bigger truck never will.

    • I just spent the last 45K miles doing samples every oil change over more than a full year to get the data for seasons and break-in to broke in.    I found the same thing to be true. Something was always teetering on done or had stepped off the cliff long before the OLM was DOA. In fact, I found about a thousand mile difference between summer and winter. That is during the winter half the OLM was STILL too long. Even the severe schedule was to long in the winter.   Now having done the work I can say I was NOT DISAPOINTED. I saw nothing I didn't already know. Nothing my father hadn't already demonstrated in his 2K OCI's pushing dated iron on dated oils and weak filters to mileages well beyond 300K.   Building on his work through use of Lab testing it wasn't hard to find the correlation between 'sight/feel/odor, the things dad relied on, and test results. Use of current viscosity stable chemistries & filters has pushed that marker for my motors out to 3K summer, 4K winter.    So the early lies were 3K on conventional oil and the lie upon the lie was 7K+. turns out to be off by a factor of two.    So... it is true that modern chemistry has doubled the useful oil life. But the base milage that came from was off by double. It's how good lies work. Partly true, sometimes mostly true so that your meter isn't set off. It also means that non-shear-stable shelf oils are only now as good as the old oils were in their best case scenario.    So the question now is how do we improve on that? Thus the question into cleanliness among the other items listed in the post quoted below.    If this bores you, feel free not to participate.       
    • Is it though?  Like LTZ, not a high take rate.  Current Sierra has AT4, Denali and Elevation as its main bread winners.  Each trim accounting for 25-35% of sales for Sierra.  SLT makes up about 10-15% at best.        Like others have predicted here for GMC, it will be:   - Pro (equal to WT Chevy)   - Elevation (replaces SLE and SLT)   - AT4 (and X)   - Denali (and Ultimate).  
    • Coming back to this question, *my* answer is no, it's not something about which I'm knowledgeable. I'd need to read up on it and understand how it applies to we the consumer and our oil change regimens.   One of your bolded points is that fresh oil in a container contains particulate matter. I don't think I'm surprised, maybe a little bit that it seems to be a major factor, but there's manufacturing process involved in oil and it doesn't exactly come in sterile packaging.    How much is filtered out on the first start by an acceptable quality filter (AC Delco, as a baseline) filter?   On the GM OLM discussion, just saying that the "number of engine revolutions" appears to be a factor in oil life... cough... maybe driving style *does* matter.    
    • GMC has been revising their trim level names over the past several years. Sierra Pro has taken over the Work Truck/SL trim name; Elevation has replaced the SLE (and with the Premium upgrade, SLT) in the SUV lineup of late; AT4/AT4 Ultimate and Denali/Denali Ultimate have been the top of the line in off road luxury and on-road luxury respectively for the full-size pickups and SUVs.    SL, SLE, SLT nomenclatures are gone in the Sierra truck line. Mark my words.
