hey fellas,

i found this on another forum and thought you might want to check it out.  it sounds a little extreme, but makes some sense.  it is supposedly a solution to the 'pinging/knocking' ordeal.

i do not know from experience if this works, but thought i'd throw it out there for you guys to check out and follow up every once in a while to see what happens.

Here it is...

My 2000 5.3 has had this process done twice & did not make any difference whatsoever for the cold start knocking that the TSB from Chev refers to. Mine is not a ticking, clicking, tapping, pinging noise at all. The knocking sounds like a diesel engine on startup & will last from 10 seconds to 2 minutes upon starting it after sitting either all day or all night in any temperature. The knocking will turn heads 200 feet away & had my neighbor asking was that my truck that made that noise! It didnt knock for 17K miles & then started when temperatures were in the teens. Now it does it in any temp & every day in the a.m. when first starting truck & after work when starting truck. The #028 service bulletin refers to piston slap noise & GM considers this noise normal & will NOT do any repair whatsoever.

I posted about a week ago about this but I don't mind saying it again. I was getting a tapping sound from the engine when I first cranked it up, and my accelerator pedal was sticking until everything got warmed up. My good friend works at the local GMC dealership and told me that this seemed to be a common problem with these model trucks. A buddy of mine told me how to fix it. He said to pull the air intake tube going in the top of the engine. Spray some carburater cleaner in the opening and let it sit for a few minutes. Clean residue off and replace the tube. Crank it back up and all should be well. It worked like a charm and now I do it every oil change as a preventive maintenance item. Takes all of five minutes and no more tapping and sticking pedal!!!!
