Synthetic Oil

I live in Alaska...our winters aren't as severe as they were when I was a kid but we still see alot of subzero mornings. I have always used synthetic and have it in my 2005 GMC 1500, and wouldn't consider doing it any other way. Startup on the cold mornings makes it a necessity. The local GM dealers all offer the synthetic and I know my local service manager uses it in his personal truck.

Personally, I believe it comes down to how much strain and wear you're willing to put on the engine. For me, I've used Mobil 1 for years and have had trucks/cars that easily went 175,000 plus without any problems. I'm not a salesman nor do I own stock in a oil company, I just know what I've experienced and for cold climates there is nothing better than synthetic.

Regular oils can create a buildup around seals and gaskets. Changing to synthetic will break down those deposits. If you already have a leak then the leak will exagerate due to the already mentioned reason and synthetic oil's better flow characteristics. For your 2005 there should be absolutely no reason not to switch. Synthetic lasts longer, protects better, and can even get you slightly better gas mileage. Its stock on Corvette, Porsche, Mercedes, etc.

FYI - I switched to synthetic on my 4Runner at 140,000 miles and have had no leaks and now burn less oil than before (1 qt per 10000 miles vs 1 qt every 5000 miles)
