Hi GMTECH,

Just thought I would share my experience at the dealer today and get your opinion.

After trying a couple of dealers to rectify this 2-3 clunk and thought I had found a good one. I showed them the TSB and they said no problem. The only issue would be that for them to do anything they would have to feel the clunk themselves. The last time I went out with the tech it was extremely difficult to make it happen, not sure if it was because it was so hot out or not? Anyway, I dropped it off this morning at 8am. I also asked them to investigate the steering wheel. If you grab it at the top with one hand and rock it slightly you can feel a bit of play, not alot but some ,and it wont do it at the bottom like at six oclock. I went back to the dealer at 1pm today. Apparently they said they compared my wheel play to a few other vehicles with no difference. I went out to the showroom and noticed no play at all. Have you seen this before? Also they had not even looked at the clunk...so I picked up the truck and left. What a bummer. Im running out of dealerships in this area that want to look at warranty issues.

Your thoughts please.

I looked at a couple trucks to see what kind of play they had.  Two brand new '06 Silverados had none.  A couple others, 2004 & 2005, with 15-25,000 miles on them had some that I could slightly (and I mean slightly) feel but it wasn't anything one could see.

Is what you have a normal amount?  Ya got me.  Hard to judge without seeing it myself.

As for the tranny... what TSB are we talking about?  Sorry, I talk about so many issues here that I can't keep 'em all straight... if we even talked about this before.

thanks for the quick reply. I did not expect you to actually go and check other vehicles but thats cool. Yes the play Im talking about is very minimal, but I guess my question on this is....is any play ok? Like I said I feel it the most when I grab the top of the steering wheel at 12 oclock and rock it a bit. I dont feel much at 6 oclock, and about the same side to side. I guess if you found some other models with the same feel it should be ok.

As for the TSB its # 05-07-30-013 and #05-07-30-012. Related to the tranny slip and 2-3 clunk. If the computer calibration is not done would it hurt anything. My dealers here are not making this easy for me. Personally if it is fine left I dont care but if its an issue then it needs to be addressed.

Thanks....mike

I do not believe there would be any long term durability issues if the calibration was not performed, but that's just an opinion.

As for your question about the steering... "is any play ok?" Some, sure, I don't see it being a problem. There's no spec for it, so it's really a matter of opinion and comparison to similar vehicles. My wife's Beretta GTU (long gone now) had about 1/8" of play for its entire life. It didn't bother her and it didn't bother me and it remained the same until we got rid of it when it was 12 years old.

Thanks again for the reply, I can drive it without worry. Im a little disturbed that the dealers just dont do the required repair on the TSB. Now I find another TSB related to the rust around the bumper air holes...great. What else will come up.

Hi there!

I just got back from getting my truck from the dealer for the same issue. I had a free 72 point inspection coupon so I figured I would use it. Everything came back ok and they also double checked everything on the suspension and steering and everything was tight.

I'm gonna say that the steering boxes in the midsize and fullsize trucks develop a little play and never get worse from that certain point.

this is not play in the steering box....its play in the steering wheel. Like I said you grab it at the top....12 oclock and pull it back and forth and you can feel a tiny amount.

Then it's probably the rag joint.

this play would be more like if the main nut was loose behing the horn pad. this is highly unlikely as it is not loose all the way around the steering wheel. Its a goofy one to describe but its there.
