Wester's Tuning Installed 10/31/05

Installed my Wester's PCM last night and my truck started right up, idled fantastic and ran great! Took all of 10 minutes to install!

The only problem was that the E-Fans would not shut off! No major issue, just annoying as all hell

On the highway i noticed a huge gain, able to go from 70-90mph in a heatbeat.

Well this morning the E-fans operated normally!

Thanks, Mr. Quadrsteer for your assistance!

I am glad i spent the extra few $$ for the Wester's tune.

Dude just wait till you take it on the next few different runs. It'll take a little while to be fully up to snuff so just imagine!

Yeah, seems like everything is great. Fans come on/go off as they should.

No issues to report as of 11/06/05

I installed my Wester's tune on Friday Nov 4, 2005. The only thing I have noticed that doesn't seem quite right is the temperature guage. Think it might have something to do with the fact I don't have my 160 thermostat in yet. I had my tune done for the 160 thermostat. Hoping it arrives soon so I can put it in and see what happens then.

I love the response the truck now has. When you hit the gas it feels like it is putting you back into the seat.

Have a good day.

Hey Bill,

Gauge cluster glitches are not uncommon when the PCM is in it's learning stage. It should clear up quickly as all the 9 or 10 computers in the truck get to know each other.

Butch,

Thanks for the update. I did notice last night that the temperature gauage is now working correctly. Will be taking a road trip over Thanksgiving so will see how it does with the highway driving. As for the commute back and forth to work it is great. Also great response when I need to step on it to get to the fire station quick.

Have a good day.

What was the cost of your Wester's tune? After installation is it suggested to run high octane fuel? Can it be run on 87 octane??

You get to pick which octane it is tuned for. I had mine dual tuned for 87/89

Appx $500.

I chose the 89/91 Hot tune. I run premium 91 octane.

You realize that a .20 cent difference in gas for premium = $5.20 for a FULL 26 Gallons? The increased power and milage more than pays for the better gas. Not only that but isn't the quality of additives a little better in the premium so that it'll run cleaner over as longer time?

As the previous guys said you can choose which octane you are going to use. I went with the 89/93 since around here all the premium is 93 octane. Only been in a week so far but I am loving what I feel.

Took the wife for a ride the other day and surprised her with how easily it just pushed her back into the seat when I hit the gas. Told her when she does get to drive the truck again she is going to have to becareful with it.

Personally I feel it has been well worth the money.

Have a great truckin day.

Any of you guys have the dreaded "KNOCK" before you installed the Wester's Tune? I've got almost 84k on my truck and am looking into getting this tune this summer(ish). I have a little tick when I first start up in the morning, and occasionally when I goose it and it drops from 4 to 2. I'm planning on upgrading the valvetrain also (Cam, lifters, rods, etc.) and hope this will clear some of that up. Thanks

    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
