For those with swapped in SS clusters

The speedo on my wife’s 2004 Hoe freaked out and planted itself at 120 MPH so I ordered a Silverado SS cluster (pn 89007468) and dropped in tonight. Question for those that have a 4L60E and a trans temp gauge……How long do you have to drive before the gauge comes off of 100 degrees? I drove it around for about 7 miles and it barely came off 100 degrees so I tipped the trans in and out of OD and lockup several times and finally got it up to about 110. Albeit it is only 26 degrees tonight, I thought the gauge would come up a little higher than 110. :D I have messed with a lot of GMT400 and 800’s but none that had a 4L60E and a trans temp gauge.

Thanks

Larry,Sounds about right.

7 miles is not a lot to make the temp gauge move, especially if its only 26 degrees.

Mine runs about 150 on a warm day.(65-75 degrees) It takes about 15-16 miles to get up to that for me.

How much was the gauge cluster and how hard was the install. I really want a trans temp gauge, but would like the factory look of the SS cluster plus I love the whiteface gauges.

Changing out the cluster is piece of cake. The worst part is listening to that stupid key in ignition dinger. You need to just pull off the facia / surround on the dash, drop the shift lever in low, remove the 4 screws that hold the cluster in, pull the wire connector, then do everything in reverse to reinstall.

Just make sure you have your cluster reprogrammed to the mileage on your existing cluster. You don't want to lose your warranty or be held for fraud years down the road when the mileage in the BCM and your speedo don't match up.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm suprised that the gauge cluster itself would keep the mileage information and not just the PCM. I guess for redundancy in case the PCM fries.

Thanks for the info MS3Dale

Kyle401,

I am not sure what these clusters cost but as SS Crew stated they are super easy to change. About a 15 minute job at the most. Listening to the dinger does get old. I have a friend that owns an AC Delco/Delphi/Visteon repair center and hooked me up with this one. He will probably just charge me whatever the cost is to refurbish my original cluster to put it back in to the exchange program. So far I will have $16 into it to ship the core back to him. The nice thing is he programmed it to my exact mileage so no worries about fraud claims whenever we decide to unload this hoe.

Update on the SS cluster install….

After the boss drove the Hoe for a couple days the Service Brake Booster message appeared on the DIC. Apparently, this is not that much of an uncommon occurrence after an instrument cluster swap as GM has a PI (prelim info bulletin) for this condition.

The situation being is if the you have a 2004 or 2005 1500 series vehicle and a replacement refurbished instrument cluster happed to be installed with 2003 IPC data a ghost DTC will trigger after 5 failed key cycles while looking for a signal from the vacuum booster. A message will also appear in the DIC. Keep in mind, 2003 1500 series trucks and SUV’s had vacuum assist brakes while 2004 and later had hydroboost assist. That is the big difference in software.

This is a quick and easy fix but you will need a Tech II scan tool to update the BCM with the latest IPC software. If you run into this have your GM dealer download software 15787061 into the BCM to make this ghost code and DIC message disappear.
