FIPK....Increase in MPG and Power???

Just curious if any one has experienced a significant increase in their MPG with the K&N FIPK.  I'm thinking of getting one for my Tahoe(5.3L 4x4), and was wondering what kind of results everyone's been getting......

I would think that at best you might see 1/2 mpg increase.  I noticed a slight improvement with my '00 Silverado 5.3L with the FIPK installed.  It takes the computer a little while to fine tune itself once the unit is installed.

Unfortunately you may see a short term drop in mpg due to the enjoyment of the improved response. :)

 

Your "puter" should reset if you follow the remove the battery connection step. :thumbs:

I would not personally recommend an FIPK anyway and would steer you toward the UPD kit.  The FIPK will still pull in hot air from the engine area, whereas the UPD uses the stock lower airbox with a modified upper and air tube assembly with a K&N filter.  The FIPK has the possibility to get real dirty and possibly pull in crud as it is an open element filter inside the engine area!  They have a group purchase right now for $209 on your doorstep for colors or $189 for black delivered.  Just type Group Purchase in the memo/comment section on the order form.  Price is good until April 19!  I got mine a few weeks ago and performs very well.  Take a look at: www.ultimatepd.com

I didn't notice any increase in MPG.  I did notice an opening up of the engine!   I have a Tahoe with 5.3 and would recommend this.   See my pics at Http://www.picturetrail.com/greenejr  I have it in combination with a single Flow 70 with dual outlets.  You will have a increase in intake noise!  It sounds like a four barrel carb and you will hear it!   This is my second FIPK,  I had one on a Jeep Grand Cherokee before.

Let's just say that I've seen a 3 mpg increase in mileage since I took the damn FIPK off.  While it may have some advantages at wide open throttle, in "real-world" driving, I saw a loss of mpg and loss of mid-range throttle response.

I am considering a UPD kit for my '01 GMC 2500 XL w/6.0 liter engine. When the vehicle was new I installed 265 Michelins and got rid of the 245 F'stones that came on it. The dealer reprogrammed for the 265's at that time. My question is this: If I disconnect the battery  during installation of the UPD kit and allow the computer to reset itself does it reset to the 245's or retain the 265 setting? I don't have a HPP (yet).

I have a FIPK and a Gibson cat back exhaust on my 01 4.8. I would have this combination again in a second. Much better power all through the band then stock. I just wish I had access to a dyno. I am serious this is a perfect combo.

Hey TahoeJeff, you have the same setup as i want to get.  FIPK and 70 series flows.  HOW DO THEY SOUND?  DO YOU LIKE IT? CAN YOU TELL ANY DIFFERENCE IN PERFORAMCE, or THROTTLE RESPONSE?!  Thanks

I have kept very detailed records on mileage.

 

New to 1385 miles with no mods:  15.8643 mpg

 

Installed FIPK at 1385 miles

 

1385 miles to 3237 miles:  15.8636 mpg

<Your results may vary>. First of all, when I went to the  285's, I lost over a mile per gallon and low end seemed to suffer. I got the HPPIII and did the 93 octane tuning and got back to 15.5 from 14.7 mpg. My 0-60 best time was 8.43 afterwards which was noticeabley quicker than before. THEN I put on the  FIPK. I fired it up and it promptly died when I put it in gear. It ran terribly for a few minutes. As the computer learned the new induction, the engine came alive. 0-60 of 7.68 and 16.5 mpg are now the rule after a couple hundred miles. I can baby it over 17 mpg if I have to. FIPK/HPPIII together are a winner for me.

I can't answer if the FIPK alone will increase MPG but with true dual exhaust and FIPK done at the same time I saw a 2 to 3 increase in MPG.  

 

Of course with any mod that changes the pitch/tone of the engine/exhaust, you really have to avoid the temptation of getting on it.  Probably the best answer to increase MPG is a light foot.

Well, I have "installed" a HPP3 to go with my FIPK.  We will see how it effects my mileage.

 

BTW, I chose the Power tuning for 87 octane.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
