Distributor Issues?

I have a 94' Chevy K1500 with a 350 and I had to uninstall and reinstall my distributor. I was told that the distributor will only go in two ways. i turned the engine to top dead center on the compression stroke by putting my finger in the number one cylinder spark plug hole and feeling for compression. I then put the distributor in based on where the number one cylinder fires on the distributor cap. Crude huh? When i went to crank it the TB spit fire. Whoops. so i yanked the Distributor and turned it 180 degrees. i've been playing with timing and cranking it, but no cigar. It wont start. All it wants to do is spit gas up from the TB. If you have any suggestions please help. Thank You.
