Aftermarket Exhaust Recommendation

Recommended Posts

Posted

I own an '01 3500 CC/LB/8.1L with 50,000 miles, which I truly love. I am looking to replace the OEM muffler system to improve air flow. I was going to investigate MagnaFlow, but I noticed that they only make aftermarket systems for 2500HD trucks with the 8.1L.

May I ask the forum for recommendations that aren't too outrageous in tems of cost? I'm not looking to to do anything other than increase air flow, and hence only modest performance increases while towing my 13000# fifth wheel trailer.

Thank you in advance,

Inside this link you will find that I have Magnaflow exhaust true dual 3". The link to the part number and description are located here.

I put two Magnaflow mufflers on mine inplace of the big factory can. I retained the stock tailpipe and I'm happy with the sound. It's fairly quiet when you want it to be, but makes some good noise when you stomp on it. My only complaint about the tone is below 1800rpm or so under a lighter load (say cruising at 40mph or so), the exhaust note has a flat drone. It really doesn't have a deep big block rumble. A little throttle fixes that or varying your speed a little. My only compliant.

My gas mileage came up by at least .5mpg (watched over multiple identical 400 mile trips before and after the exhaust mod).

My seat of the pants tells me it has more power on the top end and believe it or not, I actually think the low end feels a little stronger.

The only thing that could be a downside is when towing a heavy load, the exhaust gets quite a bit louder. I love it, but some people may not.
