how many miles is too much miles

so I looked around a bit, and found a nice looking 94 yukon, I will go testdrive it tomorrow .. well today. It is privatly onwed, and they need to get rid of it, ( the guys wife thinks it is too big and all that good stuff)

it is a 2 door and has a freshly rebuilt trans and rear axle.

Power everything and keyless entry and remote starter...

Here is what scares me a bit... it has 214k miles. now I know that it is a 350 V8, but how much more life can I expect out of it ??? I will drive it tomorrow and it will probably be nice...

the guy wants 4k or best offer.

Tell me what you think pls

As far as I can tell, that's a pretty good deal. The transmissions are a known weak point on those trucks, so it's not surprising that he's had to replace it. But as long as it's in good shape and everything is in working order....I'd jump on a 4k price tag for that truck.

I wouldn't take less than 6k for my '92, but I've got about 60k less miles than that, and the market here would allow for at least 6k. Not sure what it's like where you are though.

well, I wanna take the digi cam with me, see how it looks... I hope I like the way it rides ...... what pisses me off is that I will have to wait until august to insure it ..... thats when I had my license for 3 years and thats when insurance is gonna drop ALOT

at 214K, I'd say that engine is close to the end of its life cycle,

I concur. You can get nice used Chevys with 80,000 miles or so cheap. My first Blazer K-Series was around 9K. It had 82K miles on it.

I suggest that if your wanting just to pay cash... keep looking for something better. You might not be able to step into a 350 V8... but like Fossil said... that motor is nearing the end.

If your able to finance... go join a credit union. They have the best rates for buying a car. Don't goto a used car dealer and get shafted. First go to the credit union and set everything up.

you may get 300k out of it. A good friend of mine had a 1996 Chevy Express 2500 van with the 350 in it and he got well over 300k out of it before he sold it. Instead of car payments everymonth you are going to have repairs to keep it going. Little nagging things.. leaks, electrical gremlins, accessory failures, etc. Nothing major, 100 bucks here 250 there. It adds up quick.

Gentlemen,

I don't know what your skill level is with engines but I can tell you that a small block is pretty easy to rebuild. I used to run a fleet of small blocks and would replace bearings, cam and lifters, sometimes rings. There is very little wear in these motors. The factory hone marks would often be visible after 200k on the cylinders.

Personally, I would look more at the interior more than the infinitely rebuildable mechanicals. Don't overpay.

well I just came back from actually looking at it, so far I only saw 1 pic and talked to guy via email.

We met at a local gas tstaion for the sake of convinience..

I have to say. it runs better and smoother then alot of other vehicles with far less miles on them that I have driven.

now, the interior looked great, little dusty, but nothing major like rips or anything .. I looked around and found all kinds of goodies :chevy: The tranny got completly rebuild for this guy in the fall, he also put in new ring and pinion in the rear axle. new brakes all around .. new radiator, a tranny cooler. New springs in the back and new shocks in the front. pretty much all the coolant hoses are new and the drive belt is new too. inside it has power everything, and everything works. I aked him why he is selling it and why he would rebuild the tranny before selling it. he told me, that he was actually gonna use it as his hunting rig and didn't rebuild the tranny because it was broken, but to beef it up. it has a better torque converter in it and he told me all other kinds of things... I am not no tranny specialist, but d**n it rode nice. I never actually rode in a tahoe/yukon before but this thing felt nice. Then I opened the hood and it looked awesome. again little dusty/dirty ( it is winter after all ) but looked good. no visible leaks on the motor except on the right cylinder bank, the head there was a little oil visible. not much, just a little .... my 95 sunfire that I had leaked more oil than that bitch lol. the only thing I could nag on, is the fact that the air filter casing, on top of the motor, is a little rusty.... probably nothing serious but oh well, that was also the only rust I found other then a little rust bubble on the driver rear fender. He is selling it because he bought a new truck last year and wanted his wife to drive this on, and she doesn't like the fact that is soooo big.

Very down to earth guy. I am thinking, that the condition the truck is in, it should almost be worth buying it, getting another 350 and when this one goes... swap em.

INPUT ???

Sounds like you are selling it to yourself. He is doing a good job also. Read above and you will see some good questions. Answer some of those posts so we can give you better input. For example...

Are you financing, or paying cash? (big difference for both the buyer and the seller)

Have you looked around at comparable vehicles? (dont get stuck on the fact that it is a 350)

Try to keep an open mind.

Sounds like a good solid vehicle to me. If you don't mind the older style interior without the airbag? You can always take off the air breather and repaint it so it doesn't keep rusting out. Sounds like the transmission is good to go for the long-term with the rebuild, better torque converter and trans cooler. The engine may have alot more miles on it before it needs rebuilt, and then as stated earlier it's fairly inexpensive to rebuild it.

Sounds like he took good care of it. :chevy:

I would like to finance it "inhouse" through my father or something ( only 20 years old ) I don't care about the fact that it is a 350. it is nice but not completly needed. I will only use it as my daily driver until I go to boot camp, which I still don't have a leave date for yet :chevy: and because it is a 350, I heard some weird stuff about the 96+ 350's ... I am not trying to get in anybodies stuff here, but if I remember right then they did some design changes bewteen 95 and 96 and I read some odd stuff about that. But the feeling of being propelled by a V8 is awesome.

essentially, no I don't have the money, but I could get a loan ( which I don't wanna do .. because of collision... ) and I am fairly certain that I can get it from like my father or something. and pay him back as fast as possible, and when I sell my van, give him that cash.. should be able to pay it off within 3 or 4 months

1995 they changed the whole interior style (airbags, better sound system, plus other misc. stuff), still old throttle body injection 350 around 200 hp.

1996 they changed engine, mostly upper part, still 350 with new style Vortec heads, composite intake manifold with multiport fuel injection and mass airflow sensor, around 250 hp. Not sure about compression ratio? As far as I know, the '96 and up 350's ran good with no problems?

sound system I am not worried about, I am sound junkie, I already have a system. pretty decent ;) airbag , well , I guess I could do without it. and the interior, I liked it ... looked rugged and durable
