How much fluid?

Recommended Posts

I have a 92 K1500 350. New Process 241 Transfer Case, GMC 8.25 front front axle, the parts store says I have a 8.5" rear end, the book says a 9.5". Im gonna be changing these fluids soon and was wondering how much of the fluids each one needs to be full. The Chiltons doesnt go into much detail about the axles and says to fill to the filler plug on the transfer case. So am I to assume to do the same on the axles  and just to have an amount close to what it would take would be nice to know so I dont buy way to much. Also do I buy the limited slip additive for the front axle? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

You could have either the 8.5 or 9.5" rear-end,Count the number of bolts on the housing cover,10 bolt=8.5" and 14 bolt=9.5" rear-end.

No additive in the front OR back,NONE!,This will do more harm than good.

2.2 quarts of ATF-Dexron III is what you need for the transfer case.

On the front and rear-ends,80W-90 GL-5 gear lube is all you need.

The GM service manual is not giving me an exact amount but if I remember on my '93-'94 and '97 K1500's I had I think the front is a little over two quarts and on the back it will depend on if you have the 8.5" or 9.5" rear-end but no more than three quarts,And yes,Just fill until fluid runs out.

I usually grab 3 quarts of pennsoil ATF (rev H) fluid at walmart for $1.80 each, and a gallon of the 80W-90 GL5 plus one more quart for the front and rear diffs. I am uncoordinated, and usually spill some of each. These quantities should pretty much cover you.

I'd also highly recommend getting a new 1/2" filler plug for the rear. Advance auto has them for under a buck, and the hole is 6 sided--perfect for a GM brake tool (allen type) wrench to fit in.

If you don't have one, I'd also grab one of those funnel things you can screw right to the bottle and has about a 12" tube on it.

When you replace the transfer case fluid, I'd use some prematex #2 non-hardening sealer on the threads before putting them back on or it will leak--don't ask me how I know.
