Rear Brake Backing Plates

Recommended Posts

My '01 Silverado's backing plates are rusted thru. The dealer wants $320 to replace them. This include fluid and gasket for the rear differential.

I intend on keeping this truck a long time. I haven't the time to do it myself.

Is it worth it? Or is the problem going to arise again in a few years?

I just brought this up in the rear brakes blow thread, Mine are'nt rusted thru, but they are on there way. I wirebrushed them and painted them with some rust-olem. You need these to keep crap out of the parking brake.

Personally, Its time to start hassling the nhtsa about this, this is safety concern. It the truck was 15 years old, sure... there gonna rot out. Not one i hav;'nt owned quite 5 years yet.

Hello... Bob Lutz, this is why people only buy your cars once.

I replaced mine at about 95K (167K now). The backing plates were about $30 IIRC. Took me about an hours to replace. You have to pull the axles to replace the backing plates. I chose to replace the axle seals while I was at it. Really cheesy desing using cheap metal. This item should not rust out in 10 years IMO.

Maybe aftermarket 2 peice backing plates are available or will become available soon I hope as mine are looking crusty also. The aftermarket use to make these for A and G body style mid size rear drive GM cars from 1978 to 1987. No need to pull the axles, saves lot of time.

Theres so much WD-40 sprayed up underneath my truck they will never rust!

All seriousness though this does seem to be a problem on these trucks,Now that these trucks are 6-7yrs old we are starting to see quite a few here at the dealership rusted out pretty bad and that needs replacing.

I contacted my Dealer and asked them (Thru GM customer service) if the would replace them) they said the truck was too old. It kinda burns me that I need to spend $320 for $40 worth of parts that should last to begin with!

I only have 44K on the truck!
