1996 GMC Sierra 5.0L to 5.7L swap

Hello all,

I am looking to put a fresh motor in my 1996 GMC Sierra Z71. It currently has the 5.0L motor and the 5 spd. manual transmission. I was considering upgrading to a 5.7L motor for the additional power for towing. I was wondering if anyone else here has done a similar swap to the same vintage of truck, and what else needs to be changed to accomodate the larger displacement motor. I already have changed the exhaust to a 2 cat system, so I'm sure that can be used, but was wondering about the remainder of the electronics and bolt on's. Any input is greatly appretiated!

Thanks!

I'm an old GM guy, but i believe that the 96 SBC still share common blocks. The major difference, at least in gen 1 engines is bore and stroke. All other parts, heads, intakes, manifolds, etc are interchangable. I do not believe that the 305 ECM has the correct calibration for the 350, this should be a simple fix by installing a 350 ECM also check the injectors, see if they have the same #. All external connections, wiring, fuel, coolant, etc. should be the same

I guess you and I are alot alike Bill87, as this will be my first engine swap in a fuel injected vehicle. I agree on all the physical aspects as far as being the same, it was the electronics I had the most concerns about. When looking at aftermarket parts, it seems they share alot of components between the 5.0 and the 5.7. The ECM was one of my concerns, as was the intake/ fuel injection setup. I guess I'll do some more part #'s digging to find out what else the two motors have alike/disalike. Thanks for the reply!
