huge hole in lower dash?

I have an 06' Silvy, and there is a huge hole/Pocket in the lower center of the dash. Any body know why it is there? I had an 04' rental and it had the same thing. I was just curious if maybe it is for a brake controller to be mounted in or something. :tear:

Also it is the 40/20/40 bench, so no center console.

I have the same thing, i think it was just another randomly placed storage compartment, although it holds an iPod suprisingly well

If you are talking about the hole I have in mind, then it is where the switch for the passenger airbag shutoff used to be. In 03, it was there, but they did away with it thereafter. Cellphones fit nicely there, too.

The one I'm talking about is down next to the ash tray. go to This Site and then click on the 360 view. Then click on the interior ss EXT Cab view. now look directly below the radio and lighter socket. There is a big hole/pocket in the lower knee panel/dash.

it is about 8x8 square.

Kinda looks like were the center console would attach to the dash on a truck that has bucket seats. Wow does that look bad. I mean the least they could do is put a panel insert to cover it.

GM must be decontenting again to save $$$$

It's an oh-sh*t handle for midgets.

lol. On my W/T model that had that "hole" there, I used it to put my sunglasses in and my cell phone fit very nice and snug in the other storage compartment that was next to the air controls.

I think I have solved the mystery! I think it is the pass through for the rear air vents. I noticed on the trucks with the console, there are air vents on the back. That is the only logical explanation I can think of.

I liked the sunglass holder idea, so I tried it and it holds them perfectly.

It's still stupid to have that huge hole IMHO.

Holds change rather well.

Holds lots of change rather well--I put $20 in quarters in there and thought they may have fallen into something deeper there was so much room left over.

I don't see any harm in having a few cubby holes in the truck to stash things. I wired a lighter plug into the roof consol so I can charge my phone while it lives in there without a cord stretched to reach it. However, I cannot fathom what could be put in the spot where the electronic 4x4 controls would go (I have a manual x-fer case). A flat plate there would enable installing a few switches as needed.

Maybe it was put there just to give us something to talk about!
