Odd noise coming from wheel well area

Hi,

 

I'm a newbie the to forums, so please forgive me if I've posted this in the wrong place.

 

Here goes.

 

I've got a 2002 Silverado 1500 4x4 LS.

 

Recently I've been hearing a strange metal-like ticking while coasting in rwd. The noise goes away when I stop completely and doesn't seem to happen while I'm accelerating in rwd.

Today coming back from lunch I decided I'd pop it into 4-hi to see if the same noise was present. It didn't make it while coasting, but it was very loud while accelerating.

 

Anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? I'm not exactly mechanically inclined, but I can change my own oil.

Just went thru something that sounds exactly like what you describe.

For me, it was the U-joint on the driveaxle from the transfer case to the front.
