Catalytic Converter

My truck needs two new catalytic converters which I knew about when I purchased. I didn't know if it was best to put brand new ones on or if I could save some money by calling junkyards seeing if they had any used. I'd throw brand new ones on in a heartbeat if I wasn't trying to save for tires/rims. Any suggestions?

first off, welcome aboard

My cat went out about a year ago. My local muffler shop replaced it with a brand new Magnaflow cat, and I went ahead with the Magnaflow muffler dumped at my bed. I love the sound. I def. reccomend putting a new cat, but stay away from the GM ones. You'll pay way to much for them.

Cats are under warranty for 8 years or 80,000 miles, if you still fall under that. The two cats are part of the "y" pipe and are bought as one unit for direct replacement.

This depends on the year of vehcle and where you are at (Calif warrants them longer) Generic CATS are not expensive and the benfits of high flow CAT's is overstated so not need to sheel out top dollar for new HI pro CATs for your truck

Rammers right,The cats fall under the emissions warranty of 8/80 or "8 years/80,000 miles".

Check with your local dealer if your truck is still under the 8/80.

I'm having the "pebble rattle" issues with mine, driver's side is worst, can tap the cross-pipe even, and hear it rattle inside. Magnaflow's are the best deal going?? I don't need anything fancy, just somthing to weld into place where they are now?

Your pebble rattle issue is the filter in the converter that is what actually filters the harmful gas. When you tap the converter and it rattles it means that the filter fallen to pieces rendering it useless.

Question to all: Should I buy magnaflow catalytic converters off ebay for $55 a piece and take them to a shop to get installed or would you not recommend these catalytic converters and how would i find out what size I needed? I think it ranges from 2 to like 3.5

I am also need to replace my catalytic converters on my 98 GMC z71 long bed, But from what my local shop is telling me is that its not advised that i cut the old ones out and replace them, but to buy the whole setup, which looks something like this:

My question is can I just replace the converters or do i have to replace the whole setup? and where can i get a decent deal on this?

Hi this is my first post. If you're familiar with Ebay, you can buy this new unit for $232.50 and free shipping!! And remember no tax, unless you live in the same state as the seller. That sounds like a pretty good deal. I hope this helps.

My local muffler shop (that also does inspections) will weld in a new cat for $130.
