Hi guys I havent posted before, just after a little help. I Live in Australia and Have had no luck getting help with any questions about late model chev engines.

I have a 454 out of a '95 chev truck in my '79 c20 pickup, with the stock transmission and the computer etc. Im having some tuning problems and I havent had any luck finding someone who wants to mess with it, so im considering pulling off the TBI and putting a manifold and carby on. Can anyone tell me whether this will effect the transmission eg. will it know when to shift?, or is it easy enough done, thanks

What transmission do you have in yor 79? If it is a THM350, it will not like your 454, otherwise not many issues here and a 95 454 has a CR of 7.9 to one so absence of a knock sensor is not a big issue either.

Thanks for the reply, sorry I should have been a bit more specific, the transmission is the standard one that accompanied the 1995 454, i believe its a 4L80E. I noticed there is a little computer hooked up to it, and wasnt sure if it needs information from the wiring/sensors that i would be removing to put the carby on, for it to know when to shift, thanks

The tranny is another issue then as the 4L80E needs computer control to aid shifting. Itf you use a beefed up 700R4 (which can handle a 454 with a little work) you will not need any electric hook up to tranny except to lock converter as the rest of it is mechnical. There is no real easy solution hre if you do not want to transfer the 454 computer system and TBI. For what it is worth, the TBI is pretty reliable and with a aftermarket TBI intake and a larger TBI unit, the 454 will respond favoribly with a lot more seat of the pants experiance because as it shipped it was badly choked off by intake and factory TBI unt.

If it was my swap. I would use the complete computer and TBI setup in the swap and then do a few other modes listed above. Good Luck!
