Intake for the 6.0

Looking at gettin an intake for my 01. What intakes are yall running? Notice any changes in the way the truck ran, good or bad? Where did yet get it at? I've heard alot of good things about the K&N intakes.

I'm probably different than most, but all I did was put in an Airaid MIT tube in place of the factory tube. Then I put an Amsoil air filter in the stock box because I read they filter way better than K&N and flow almost the same. I went this way because I plan on offroading and didn't want to worry about getting water in an open element filter. Overall, i'm sure I probably picked up a couple ponies, but I really couldn't tell. Same goes with the exhaust, but I'm sure they both helped somehow.

I went with the K & N FIPK. Haven't had it in long enough to tell if it makes a difference in mileage...but the sound! Back in the day I remember flipping over the air cleaner cover to let in more air; sounds kinda like that. A good throaty :) roar.

I think making more noise is about all these intakes are good for. I had an Airraid on my 1/2 ton 5.3 I recently sold and all I could really tell it did was considerably raise underhood noise. Some people may like the noise but after a while I couldn't stand it anymore. Especially while towing.

If you really want to increase your performance skip the intake and get yourself a custom PCM tune.

That's exactly what I did.... the only thing that disappointed me was that the intake got quieter when I put on the MIT :D .... I really liked that deep, throaty sound before the MIT. I also "opened up" the factory airbox and added a K&N filter. I do like how much cleaner the engine bay is with the factory tube out of the way. I am going to get a dyno tune in the near future to hopefully pull a few more ponies out of it.

Curly,

Saw your sig. How do you like your JESSE tune. What were your results? which tune did you get? Thinking of getting one myself. Also, are you still under warranty?

I like the Jesse tune.... the only complaint I have is with it is that the shifts are a bit too firm (harsh) for driving with no load on the truck (around town, etc). When I have a load on it, it shifts great. I'm sure Jesse would correct this if I sent the computer back in but I have been busy hauling alot lately so it has been nice having the current tune (with the firmer shifts). There was a definite difference in throttle response  and it seems to pull much harder through the RPM range. I got the "standard" tune for 87/91 octane, compensated for my aftermarket tires, and turned on the gas mileage feature (there is probably more but I would have to look on my sheet from Jesse to list all of it, these are the major items).

Get the Jesse tune, you won't regret it!! The only reason I am considering a dyno tune is to pull out a few more ponies and make it a bit more custom (not knocking Jesse's work in any way) and I have to get my Trans Am re-tuned for my last set of go-fast mods :P . The fiance also just bought a Trailblazer SS so that will probably be getting a dyno tune also. I figure I should be able to get a good group discount if I carry all three of them :D .

I am still under warranty so I bought another computer from a local salvage yard (~$100) and got the tune on that one so I still have the factory, untouched computer in case I need warranty work :D.

Nice! Thanks for the reply. I've been looking around for a salvage yard pcm as well. No luck yet. I recieved an email from Hannah at W4Me saying they don't have any '06 cores yet, so I'm SOL til they get some. :D I'm not willing to send mine in and be without the stock pcm and the vehicle for as long as it would take to get the Jesse tuned pcm.

Did you have to do the crank re-learn? Also are those 305's on you stock rims? Lift?

Do you have to use an '06 PCM? I know when I got mine, you could use several different years of truck PCM (same computer for many years). You might want to check with W4Me to see if you can use another year.

I did have to do the crank sensor re-learn. Luckily, a "friend of a friend" works at a local dealership and he did the re-learn for me. When we asked him to do it, he knew exactly what was going on :D .

Yes, the 305's are on stock HD wheels. All we did was turn up the torsion bars (re-aligned the truck afterwards) and trimmed some of the lower facia (which you don't even see unless you are under the truck).

Thanks, I'll have to call Jesse and see if I that's possible. Those tires look good on your rig. I'm gonna drive my OEM tires into the ground before I replace them. Thinking of 285's...just have to figure out which brand style.

Thanks! New tires was probably my favorite appearance "mod" to the HD (I don't do any high mileage heavy hauling so I felt safe with the 305's). I was able to sell the factory tires so it was easier on the wallet. I have enjoyed the Duelers... so far they are wearing evenly and are quiet at highway speed (I have around 10k on them now). Good luck with your tune, let everyone know what you think about it.

Be careful! 305's do not belong on 6.5" wide rims. I'm suprised you found any place that would even mount them.
