I got my new engine in this weekend and when I got around to starting it for the first time, it would not turn over. I checked out the TBI and the injectors were not spraying when I was cranking the engine. I also noticed that the fuel pump did not turn on when I turned the ignition on.

Any thoughts as to what could be the problem? I am assuming that there is a fuse for the fuel pump, so I will check that, but any more advice would be appreciated.

Fuses all look good and the leads to the pump also look good. There are three wires that go to the pump. How would I go about checking for power? I would assume that there would be at least one that would register 12v when the ignition is on. Is this correct? Thanks!

Just a thought on the third lead: fuel level sender? The third lead could also be used to modulate the pump to control its pressure output.

Before you get too far into tracing wires and what not, have a buddy crank the engine while you beat on the gas tank with a rubber mallet. Often times this will jar a bad fuel pump back to life for a short period of time.

If this is the case, then you will know your pump is the cause of your problems. If nothing happens, then proceed with the wire trace.

Thanks guys.

I checked out the wiring today and found out that I have a ground that is grounded to the engine block and two 12 volt leads. One has a constant 12v supply when the ignition is turned on and the other has a 12 volt signal for about 10 seconds when the ignition is tuned on and probably connects to the fuel pump relay. All the connections are good all the way back to the wiring harness at the fuel pump.

Does anyone know where the fuel pump relay is at on my van? I may try replacing that first since it is pretty cheap and a hell of a lot easier than dropping the gas tank.

BTW, I had the fuel pump replaced about 8 months ago. Ever since it was replaced it has been VERY loud. I am wondering if the shop that replaced it f'ed it up.

I wouldn't go replacing the relay yet. Make a test lamp out of a couple of pieces of wire and an old globe (I used an old tail lamp globe).

Find the wire that goes to your relay and hook one lead to that and the other to ground. When you turn on the ignition the lamp should light up for 2 seconds. When you turn the ignition off, it should light up again for 3 seconds. If this is happening, check your wiring to the pump. If your wiring is OK, time to drop the tank.

This is how I found that my pump was dead.

There's a guy on evilbay sells new 'genuine' complete sender/pumps for about $150.00. Mine has been running fine for about 6 months so far.

Thanks man. I checked my relay today and it works fine. From there I went and dropped the gas tank and the sending unit really needed replacement, so I ordered one today. I also called the shop that replaced my pump, and they told me to bring it in. Hopefully they will swap it out and give me a new one to install.

I inspected the pump and found that it had melted a hole in the filter bag! I guess there really was something wrong with the new pump, especially since it only had 800 miles on it. I plan on replacing that filter and the inline filter as well when I install the new pump.
