6.0 Ping

Recommended Posts

Well...I've tried most everything I can think of to get this 2001 6.0 to stop pinging.  It even pings on 93 octane gas!  I've gone to colder plugs, cleaners, additives and whatnot, nothing seems to help.  I'm afraid to take it back to a dealer because if they retard the spark advance it will lose the great low end power pop it has.  I've tried teaching it to use lower octane but to no avail.  I've tried resetting the computer too.

Does anyone have an idea before I find a dealer to whine to?

My service mgr told me once that using anything other than regular unleaded fuel in these trucks can send them into a "Tizzy".

I've always been able to hear a little top end noise in my truck, but I attribute that to the aluminum heads and the way they reverberate sound as compared to cast iron heads.  However the noise I hear is more at low RPM's and not under acceleration, so I may describing something you don't have or aren't concerned about either.  (I don't have the knock you get like when you have bad fuel and you are pulling a load).

:)  :D  :D BIG NEWS!

I just talked to the service manager at a small Chevy dealership near where I live now, there is a GM Service Bulletin that was issued 5/22/02 that discusses the ping problem.  It states that the rear knock sensor is probably defective and should be replaced.  Mine is being replaced next tuesday morning.  I'll report the result.

I'll try to get the TSB when I'm at the dealer on Tuesday

Wink,

I doubt if this will repair the 'cold start knock'.  This is a ping issue.  Hard to believe they have to remove the intake manifold to replace this sensor.

Condition

Some customers may comment on a mild to severe engine ping (commonly referred to as spark knock), usually worse during acceleration and/or an illuminated MIL. Upon investigation, the technician may find DTC P0332 set.

Cause

This condition may be the result of corrosion of the rear bank knock sensor due to water intrusion into the sensor cavity. This condition is more apparent on vehicles in which customers frequently wash the engine compartment.

Correction

Replace the rear bank knock sensor and build a dam (wall) around the sensor using RTV to divert water away from the sensor. Use the procedure and part number listed below.

Remove the intake manifold. Refer to the Intake Manifold Replacement procedure in the Engine Controls sub-section of the appropriate Service Manual.

Remove the wiring harness assembly from the knock sensor.

Remove the rear bank knock sensor.

Install the new rear bank knock sensor. Tighten

Tighten the knock sensor to 20 N·m(15 lb ft).

Install the wiring harness assembly to the knock sensor.

Apply a bead of RTV silicone sealant approximately 9 mm (3/8 in) wide and 6 mm (1/4 in) high along the outside edge of the ridge on the engine block valley cover around the rear bank knock sensor. DO NOT form a complete circle. Leave the rear section open as shown.

From the underside of the intake manifold, completely remove the rear intake manifold seal (foam material).

Install the intake manifold. Refer to the Intake Manifold Replacement procedure in the Engine Controls sub-section of the appropriate Service Manual.

Thanks for the info!  I've just about given up on the cold start knock.  The ping or detonation problem seems fixable so that's what I'm working on at this time.  The injector ball rattling is also very annoying but that's another one we must live with even though it sounds exactly like rocker arm clatter.
