Replacing the tranny oil cooler

We own a 2003 GMC 2500hd 4x4 with the factory installed tranny cooler . We tow a 19 ft toy hauler that weighs in around 6000 lbs fully loaded. We have noticed the tranny temps climb a little high on grades (215 or 220) and would like to know your take on replacing the cooler with one that is larger or the B&M with the built in 12 volt fan. I realize occasionally reaching these temps are not so bad but we only have 25000 miles on this truck and want it to last for years to come.

 

Does anyone have any tips since we are going ahead and replacing it soon but are unsure of the right size to purchase for optimum performance.

Well, since I last wrote, we have installed the B&M Hi-Teck cooler with fan and it went in with enough room behind the grille but we had to fabricate our own brackets, purchase fittings and 15amp fuse holder plus hose and extra wire.

Luckily we had some of this stuff on hand but just to let everyone know, they don't come with an install kit. We have yet to try it out to see if it is going to work but I bet just upgrading to the larger size will be an improvment overall.

I am sure this will be better for you but before I upgraded my trans cooler I contacted Hayden for recommendations. They did not rec the fan cooler combo unless it was to be remotely mounted. The engineer at hayden said the fan will actually block some air flow to the cooler when it is not on. However, when it is on, it will move a great deal of air and will offer great cooling.

 

I installed a 11 x 11 7/8 stacked plate cooler which is exactly the same design cooler that GM uses only about twice as big.

 

Just watch your temps and you may have to run the fan a good deal of the time to keep the temps down.
