Custom Tune for E85?

Its my understanding that E85 will result in lower mpg but is anywhere from 100 to 105 octane. Would a custom tune (wait4me) be able to improve on this. Its my understanding that Jesse can tune for 91-93 octane and get nice MPG improvement as well as added HP. Would running E85 (with a tune) get you the same results as maybe running 87 octane (MPG wise)but with the added benefit of higher HP?

It is also my understanding that FlexFuel vehicles have larger fuel pump and larger injectors, diff sensors. Would it be possible to open those things up with a tune when running on regular gas? My 5.3 seems to be a little quicker stock than most and wondering if the larger fuel pump, injectors would be the difference?

 

Just some thoughts I have been pondering...

I'm not sure if you can get a tune specifically for E85 fuel. I did have a westers tune on my 03 tahoe and I was still able to run E85 in the Tahoe. I had the same basic results with the E85 as regular fuel. I had a 93/91 hot tune. E85 in general got me worse fuel mileage then 93 octane but the tune improved my E85 mileage from 12 to about 14-15 and my 93 octane mileage from 15 to about 17-18. So it will help your mileage but I don't know if they did a tune specifically for e85 if they could make it even better. My hunch is yes they could me more aggressive with the timing and fuel changes because of the high octane if you are running only E85 but you could severly limit the flexibility of the vehicle because you could do serious damage (detonation) if you had to use regular fuel. And E85 still isn't available in all markets. Best bet would be to call your programmer of choice. Based on everything I've read it sounds like all the major programmers (wester, nelson, Wait4me) are very helpful when your trying to pick the best tune for your needs.

      It wouldn’t have happened if the government hadn’t mandated outrageous fuel mileage standards. It does very little for the consumer. It adds cost. Back during Covid there was a chip shortage. They gave a rebate for your truck if it didn’t have the chip to turn on cylinder deactivation. It was 50$ because at best you may see 1/2 a mile increase per gallon. Splitting hairs each fuel mileage trick wasn’t mandated. The government doesn’t do the engineering work and say use this until it’s already in use and they like it. The fuel mileage was mandated. And those add ons the results. There’s a mandate and they are the results.

      It was never mandated.  Ever.    Automakers were incentivized to install it by getting CAFE credits to help with their vehicle fleet fuel economy scores.  They were being handed money/CAFE credits to install it.  Which is NOT a mandate.       The current admin removed the incentives that were behind them installing it.

      My brand new 2007 Silverado's wax frame was rust from end to end partway through it's SECOND winter here in MA. That stuff is completely useless.
