02 2500 hd.........I've got a 8 gauge wire running from the "little red box" that the battery/alternator join up too.......to the rear of my truck for power to my battery for my dump trailer

30A fuse in the line

yah or nah? thanks! :uhoh:

how about a return ground wire... and what are you powering on your trailer? you might need something bigger then a 30 amp fuse, that alternator can do about 105ish or so amps

power source for my truck size battery in the trailer that works the hydraulic pump.......through which it is grounded

i'm connected on the "little red box" where the alternator and battery hook together

Like frozen 001 said why not just use the wire already back there for that purpose?

Anyway I have a dump trailer using the factory wire to charge. It works fine to keep the trailer battery charged. You should unplug the trailer when you activate the dump. The draw from the pump will blow the fuse.

the little 14 gauge wire wasn't enough..........my battery wasn't being charged, used the 8 gauge and now i've got enough power to charge it

i checked and there was power but there just wasn't enough current

The guage wire is not going to actually limit the current back to the trailer plug. Are you sure it is 14 gauge on that line?? The problem is most likely the voltage drop seen across that distance at high current levels.

If the wire is 14 gauge then at 20 amps the voltage th the plug would be around 1 volt less than at the battery (Figuring 20 feet). Assuming your alternator is working propery even with the 1 volt drop it should still be high enough to charge your battery up .

If your battery isn't charging, you've got some other issue besides the wire. EVERY trailer I've towed, and every trailer my dad's ever towed, he's NEVER needed more than the factory wire.

Exactly.. there is something else wrong... You can charge a batter with far less current than my 20 amp example I used. There is something else wrong... it is not the factory wire.
