Muffler Replacement

I want to change the sound of the exhaust on my Sierra (5.3).  I don’t want anything too loud; I do want a rumble but nothing too outrageous.  I’m interested in hearing the experience of those of you out there that have changed only the muffler.  Can’t see spending $300+ for a cat back system for only the sound.  I’m interested in you opinion of the sound, what it cost and if you had it to do all over again would you do the same or what would you change.

While on the subject of exhaust…  Does anyone know if it’s possible to get an exhaust tip like the one they are putting on the new Sierra Denalis?  If so where and how much?  I figure if I have to go to GMC it would cost me more then the above muffler.

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Quietest good sounding muffler for me is the Flowmaster 70 series. Part number 53072 is a drop in for the late model trucks,  I didn't even have to use a extention pipe to join it.

Bout what your going to spend at any muffler shop to have exhaust work done with a decent muffler put on.  If not more.  Its not what you know, its who ya know.  Case in point, my exhaust cost me 40 bucks heh heh.  :)  3inch pipe with a 40 series  dual chamber.   Might be a bit louder than what your looking for but a 60 series should suit you fine.

My friend put the 70 series Flowmaster on his stepside.  At idle you can hardly tell it's on there except for a low gurgle.  Under power it sounds very good (subtle but much throatier than stock).  He used his existing pipes, and just swapped out the muffler.

Shaners,

Have you heard an '02 Dodge 4.7L Ram idle?

There is one at work and it sounds much more noticeable than mine, but not obscene.

The Rams do have a nice rumble out of the box  :P

JAFO - I have the Flowmaster 40 on my 5.3l Sierra. I have a wav file on my webpage, just click on the pic below if you're interested.  There is some resonance in the cab around 2K RPM, but a nice rumble outside the truck. I'm happy with it  :)

i had my stock muffler cut out and put a FloPro Glasspack in it's place. The total bill was $42 and some change. It sounds great. You have a nice deep rumble while on it and it's just a bit louder than stock at cruising highway speeds. Lower rpm cruising you don'e even here it. I would recommend this setup, I have it and 3 of my buddies were quick to copy. You won't be dissapointed.

I also went with the Flowmaster 50 series.  Not only drastically changed the way the engine sounded, but there was also a noticeable performance gain.  Slightly better mpg as well.  I spent a little less than $300 for true dual 50's.

I may be wrong, but isn't 'True Duals' when you don't have a Y-pipe...  I.E. headers/manifolds into two seperate pipes, into two seperate cats, maybe an X-pipe, into two mufflers and out?  I'm not saying that you don't have this... I am just trying to clarify!  If you do have this exactly how did you run that?  Did you just cut off the y-pipe and run the pipes from the cats on back into two mufflers?

Thanks!

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
