98 Z71 Intake Manifold Leak

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I have my second leak on the front of the intake manifold between the block and the manifold. I have used Bars Leak as a temporary fix but am getting ready to tear into this problem again.

I wanted to know from those that have done this do you prefer to us the gaskets for the front and back of the manifold to seal the gap or do you use High Temp RTV gasket maker. Last time I used the RTV and the problem has come back so wanted some other opinions. I have done this successfully on my 454 in my camaro.

Also be it Fel-Pro or GM's gaskets do you recommend using gasket sealer in addition to the self sealing gaskets or not. (Talking about the ones that match up with the heads obviously.)

Also as far as the removal and install goes last time I had luck in just marking the distributer base and the intake manifold for alignment is that ok or did I just get lucky???

Thanks for any help / advice....

I did my 97 for a second time and used the new GM Gaskets. I also did my fathers 96 and he bought the new Fel-Pros. Both are hood looking gaskets in my opinion. There are no end gaskets for the block. You are to use RTV for those and the Fel-Pros have some in the gasket set. Fel-Pro gaskets have all the parts you will need to do the job...fule line o-rings, valve cover gasket, upper and lower intake set.

Make sure you use a torque wrench and mark your distributor before you pull it out. Mark the rotor to distributor body also...both need to be done. I think you got d**n lucky.

Do not use FelPro...you'll be replacing them soon!

Use the NEW updated GM gaskets from a dealer...trust me.

I am not a wizard Mr. Smith....

I'm just referring to personel experience that I've had with two different GM's with leaking intake manifolds.

The Felpro's do not compress properly like the GM gaskets. If you could compare the two...you could see why.

Well lets visit this since I have used both on 2 different trucks.....

The GM gaskets were thicker with a plastic frame not much different than the factory blue crap. They did have metal inserts in the bolt holes to prevent overtorquing. So GM really didn't change much in my opinion. These went on my 97.

Fel-Pros had a metal core frame and metal inserts in the bolt holes with a substantial gasket surface, much improved over the Fel-Pros I put on 3 years ago without the improvements. And those Fel_Pros failed just like the stock GM. Those went on my dads 96.

I know that I used the torque specs recomended by the respective manufacturers and the "crush" looks identical.

I'm not going to get in a urinating contest with you. I just asked for some facts and as usual I see opinions. Unless you have specific measurements then your claim is opinion. If you use proper procedures either gasket will work. I think it is up to the individual to make that choice.

This was MY opinion, I post it as such.

Opinions? WTF

If you'll look...there's IS a new redesigned gasket  :)

Hey bud the loser is your sorry self... Yes opinion...when you don't post data to back up your claim it is an opinion. Gee you internet experts are so slow.

And if you actually knew anything you would post it up instead of trying to start a flame war. Talk all the smack you want but I at least know where my hood is at.

I know about redesigned gaskets assclown...I used them.

In addition:

If you plan to purchase the new revised gasket visual ID of the new gasket is easy. The old gasket design uses a white o-"ring"-type seal on bothe sides of the gasket. On the new gasket this o-"ring" is black.

Of course you can verify if you got the new one with the above mentioned GM OEM Parts Number as well.

As far as marking the distributor. It is possible to do the job with makring the distributor. You won't be able to check timing with a timing light. On this engine you will need a diagnostic scanner to check/set reference base timing. Base timing is 0 and tolerance is +2 degrees (not + - it is only +) according to GM.

Mr. Smith as to be confirmed with other post of yours, this is not the first time you are responding here on this forum with such an anger. I hope that you understand that regardless of your biological age, such a behavior underscores immaturity. I think most of us understand that. Your credibility suffers.

Which manufacturer... GM OEM is a light blue not white(old design). You can't get this gasket anymore as it is out of production according to my chevy parts guy. That doesn't mean in podunk USA you won't find them on the shelf. The new GM is black. Those aren't o-ring either. They are silicone imprinted.

Fel Pro is metal core with black silicone imprinted seal.

As usual you fail to put your so called knowledge out there...

This isn't the first time you posted crap. Why is it you go out of your way to BS people when you are wrong. I posted my information in another thread and you bash here and hide in the other. Interesting to be sure and once again you attempt to squirm and wiggle your way out and call me names? ... Between yourself and Tee I find both of you funny. Typical of the experts on the net...When cornered flame...

Once again I had to correct you. You haven't done your research at all just regurgitate what you heard elsewhere.

Your other BS

And since you are so smart how do you discern my anger. Kinda hard by the typed word. But once again you are so smart and all... I guess you never heard of sarcasm. Oh well

I really could care less what you think of me. You have absolutely no place in my life, so your comment is irrelevant. So you play your silly games but when you post BS I will go out of my way to insure you look just as stupid as you do in this thread.

And T when you started the name calling I responded in kind...Don't go there and I won't either...Got that?

Mr. Smith you don't really make sense. Your constant outbrakes of anger distract attention of the subject. This is a forum of discussion with many opinions. This supposed to be a think tank where we respect eachothers opinions and learn from eachother. We might have differences in opinion but we don't insult eachother and don't call eachother names. This is not the place to unload any form of anger. Perhaps you ought to consider that for your next posts. :) Maturity and respect for others please.
