Instrument Cluster totally dead

I know this a forum for GM trucks but this could well apply to any GM vehicle made with an elec. dash. My dad's 2000 Monte 3.4L with the gauges package, has died after a short disconnect of the battery. All the engine controls look good, drives around but no gauges.

Is it just the gauges or?? Do the warning lights go through the start up self test and illuminate on start up? Do the gauges sweep? Or is the whole cluster dead all the time.

LOTS of BCM problems on the Monte and Impala back then. The BCM has a lot to do with the cluster. Any chance the battery polarity was reversed, even just for a second?

No it does not have any warning lights and did not reverse the polarity at all, left the positive term on while i put in new water pump.

I guess I'd check fuses first. There's one in the left side of the IP junction block that is ignition power for the cluster. Another is battery power. Sorry, I don't have how they're labeled. Just get a test light and check 'em all with the key on.

The first thing I checked were all the fuses in the car and they are OK. The dash lights up, but no gauges just the night dash lights. When I reconnected the battery I saw a great spark and the started right up and bled the air out of the cooling system.
