problem with autotrack

I have a 2003 1500HD with autotrack. I will be driving down the road and I will look down and see that the red light for neutral will be on in the autotrack switches. Everything seems fine with the truck while driving. It's just that the red neutral light is on instead of the yellow 2WD light. If you cycle the ignition key, The 2WD light will be on and it doesn't happen again for about a week.

*usually* this is a problem with the encoder motor sensor, but there are a dozen or more TSB's on various 4wd problems, and it could be any number of things. It'd be really helpful to know what, if any, codes exist in the system.

 

Do you ever get a "Service 4wd" message on the DIC?

I never get the "Service 4wd" message. Just the red neutral light on the switch. The last time it happened it was raining out. The light seemed to stay on longer. I had to cycle the key a few more times. Is there any way to get 4wd codes without a chevy scan tool?

I've had the same problem with mine for the past 10k miles. I got a "service 4wd" light to come on, they replaced an actuator. About 2k later, everytime i started my truck, the switch in the dash would be in a different position (mostly "neutral" but also "auto" and one particular time it liked "4 low" a bunch of times). I've taken it to the dealer 4 or 5 times now. They've replaced the in-dash switch twice, the decoder on the transfer case twice, another piece that's just under the dash. I think pretty much they've replaced everything except the wires and transfer case. Each time i've taken it in and they've replaced something, about 2-3k miles later it starts up again.

 

This last time they kept it over night and replaced the decoder on the transfer case. They even said they took the new decoder out, put the old back in and tweaked it a little and NONE of the lights came on. They put the new decoder back in and gave the truck back to me. They told me straight up that they aren't 100% sure that they've rectified the problem yet, but there is no sense in them keeping the truck i might as well drive it until it acts up again.

 

That was about 500 miles ago...i'm afraid it might be acting up again because tonight i started my truck and it was in "auto" and i didn't put it there to start with. I'm waiting for it to repeat itself more or give me the "service 4wd" message.

 

I've written to GM Customer Service about this...along with another problem i had with my speedometer...i keep calling my "specialist" to see how things are going, but he hasn't returned my call in probably a month now. I'll keep trying...

 

My only advice would be to keep chugging along. I love my vehicle and don't want to claim 'lemon' but i'm afraid i might have one. :troll:

      You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.

      You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
