Growl noise from Fuel tank

I have had an intermintant growl noise eminating from the fuel tank. It has gotten worse over the last few months. using a screw driver as a stetiscope, I narrowed down to the fuel system, and seemed to be cominf=g from the fuel tank. I changed the fuel filter, and now changed the fuel pump. After the pump change, it was quiet for 1 day then it started in again. Last night while the truck was running and it was growling, I hit the tank with a hammer, after the 5th hit, it stopped and was fine this morning yet.

Do I have a plugged vent or something. I have run out of ideas..

Help!!!!

Any lost dogs in the neighborhood?

Well, the only thing in the tank that has moving parts and can make that type of noise would be the pump. Did you put in an OE pump or some cheapie aftermarket junk?

A pump from Global Automotive.

But the growl is the same as the pump I took out with 118000 miles on it.

Could a vent be plugged or a part of the fuel return cause this.. I just cant see 2 pumps do something this strange back to back.

Not that I've ever seen or heard. It is unusual to have two pumps doing the same thing, but I really can't see it being anything else.

Hi RaysZ71--In tank fuel pumps can make a lot of noise, especially if you run with a small amount of fuel in your tank. Fill up your tank, and turn up your stereo, and your problem will disappear.--Frank Sub

Just filling the tank will probably drown the dog.

What is the box infront of the fuel tank for? The fuel lines appear to go into and out of this box. I am wondering if the problem may be there.

That's the charcoal canister for the evap system. It just collects fuel vapors which are later purged. There's really not much that can go wrong with them and there are no moving parts, so no way it's going to make any noises.

could the pump be vibrating in the assembly? I replaced the pump only(hose and filters, pump), not the whole assembly.

It also does not matter how much fuel is in the tank.

I don't think that replacing only the pump is recomended. When I replace a pump I replace the whole assy. You probably have a bad pump again. Usually before the pump goes bad it sounds louder, but not all the time. I think you need to but the whole assy.
