Jim-bo Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 I just bought a 1996 4WD Jimmy with for peanuts, with what was described as a "blown engine". The seller couldn't tell me more than that, but my plan was to replace the whole motor with one from a salvage yard. However, on starting it up it makes a noise a bit like a badly abused squirrel; a sqeaking, scraping noise. It sounds like metal on metal.... is this likely to be crankshaft bearings, or a broken balancer shaft (as I have been told it might be) or something less terminal and more repairable? The reason I'm wondering is that it doesn't seem to make the noise while it is turning over on the starter, only once it has fired. At idle it is very lumpy. If I do need an engine, could you please clear up which models/years will be a straight swap, as there seems to be contradictory information everywhere I look! Any tips would be appreciated!! (Also, if anyone has a spare 'W' engine I might be interested!!)
kheiney Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 Your Jimmy should have a Vortec 4.3L 190 hp V-6 engine You should be able to swap in any 96 or newer engine from a Jimmy or Blazer. I'm pretty sure there was only one engine in for them.

Otherwise you're looking at putting other parts in to get it running.
Jim-bo Posted November 1, 2006 Author Posted November 1, 2006 That's what I was hoping, but I have read that things like the starter motor changed after 1998... If I'm getting an engine from a salvage yard (that usually have ancilliary components like the starter, oil pump, alternator etc. removed) won't this cause problems?
